Researching the history of T2s

Discussion in 'Type 2 History' started by 2435mick, Jan 4, 2013.

  1. I am the fortunate and proud owner of not one but two T2s, both undergoing restoration (major), one is a 1979 van and the other is a 1973 camper.
The logbook for the van states VAN/SIDEWINDOWS and the logbook for the camper states MOTORCARAVAN.
I believe the camper is a Devon but how would I go about confirming this
The van, I would like to find out if it started life just as a van or whether it originated with windows in it
Any assistance in where to start would be really appreciated
Additionally, is it worth/how do I go about registering the van as a camper? as I understand this area can greatly affect insurance

    any pics pre restored?
to qualify as motorcaravan you need certain things in the van - google what makes a motorcaravan or suchlike- you'll get loads of advice on here mate.

  3. Here is the van

  4. This is the campervan as I bought it (sandblasted then covered with a sheet and left)

Both of those look like they originally had windows to me.

  7. The M-plate will tell you a fair bit about them, original colour, destination, micro bus, panel van westfalia, even how much fuel it left the [glow=red,2,300]FACT[/glow]ory with, always a good place to start.

  8. Woody, can I assume you have identified the camper as a Devon because of the high top?
The van, I have a suspicion the windows were possibly fitted from the outset as they appear to be recessed, this brings me to the next bit, why would a van have windows or could it have been supplied with seats or similar?

Could have been a micro bus. If they're recessed they're either original or someone went to a hell of a length to graft the frames in.

Metal plate behind passenger seat on bulkhead (rhd) or under dash with a load of numbers on

The second one is a Devon and looks like it is a genuine camper conversion , the second one is a combi or van with factory fitted windows as baysearcher says , The first one could have been anything from a taxi to a camper so you really need to look behind the passenger seat for a m plate and post a picture up on here , it will tell you the factory spec !

  13. Ahh............ vin plate, gotcha now, I will have a look at it, is there (other than DVLA) where I could reserch for the desired info?
