Refurbs Carbs in - wont start!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by dubster, Jan 21, 2012.

  1. Finally got round to putting the carbs in today but having real problems starting it.

When I first put them in, it fired up (obviously struggled a little as hadnt been run for a while) but then after a few seconds with foot flat the revs just seemed to drop and the engine died. Now it wont start again!

I've connected everything up (I know that would be the first question) and the carbs seem to be jetting ok (opened the choke to check) but it just isn't firing.

    Anyone got any ideas?

Failing that as I want them set up right, anyone fancy a day at mine either next Sat (28th) or 10th Feb, I'm sure we could come to some arrangement on beer tokens or something for some help.

And failing that...... any London mechs fancy a day out of the office? As I cant get it to you....

    Cheers

  2. what carbs are they

i have recently fitted a set of deli 36's and it took a lot of engine turning over to full everything up with fuel

if you think you have fuel look down the barrel of the carb while pushing the linkage to open the throttle

can you see a jet of fuel pumped into the carb ?

  3. Thanks mate, but pretty sure its the fuel jets are ok. They are the original solex carbs, just had them completely refurbished.

  4. Have you reset the mixture and idle screws back to the base settings as well as the central mixture screw?

I've just rebuilt my PDSITS with an original Solex kit from the Carburettor Hospital and have spent weeks trying to set them properly, and getting nowhere quickly.

I made sure the float chambers were fuelled by filling them using a short length of fuel hose and a small funnel. Also I set the volume mixture screws at two and a half turns out each, and the same for the idle speed screw. The idle mixture screw I set for 1 1/2 turns out. She popped into life on the first turn over!

However, she is not running right. Even with the idle bypass isolated I can't get the idle speed down below about 1100. I've balanced the throttles, balanced the volume mixture screws, got a slightly lean mix, but she's still over revving. I set the throttle stops as per the manual, but even winding them right down still gives 1100, and a lot more when the idle by pass is brought back in. Any ideas any body?

    Anyway, enough of my problems....

If yours won't start I'd check the cut off valves are working ok. With the ignition on pull off the cable connectors on the main valve on both sides and the idle cut off one at a time and listen for the little click of the valves opening. If they are suspect then whip them out and bench test them with 12v

Have you had the inlet manifolds off and forgotten to re-connect the servo vac hose the other side of the tinware?

  7. I am pretty sure everything is connected up again properly.

Bit if digging, and all I can think is that it is set up to be running very rich/flooded engine. Going to strip them off again Saturday hopefully and reset everything.........

Thanks for all the suggestions though.

  8. Have you popped a plug out to check for fuel getting to the cylinders?

  9. No I didnt, that was actually suggested to me this morning by someone with a very 'well that should be obvious' look on their face :-[

  10. when things go wrong its the obvious stuff that gets over-looked!!

I'm very disapointed to here this. Mine were so good!
Must be something simple - have you checked the various cut-off solenoids are working? Ignition on, dab the conectors on and off and hear the obvious click. I really wouldn't mess with the settings, specially the throttle stops, until you've exhausted other possibilities. How have you balanced the linkages? By eye should be ok to get it running 95% correct.

You didn't leave a clamp on the fuel pipe under the van I don't suppose...

I did it to Rancherra's van once - he came all the way from London to pick it up. It backed out of the unit on the petrol in the carb/pipe, then stalled and wouldn't start again. 10 minutes later - Doh!

  14. No good.......... Checked things again this morning and same thing, fired up and died. Checked spark plugs (1 each side) and they were just wet with fuel. Playing with mixture screw didnt seem to give me any differences.

Think its time to give up and call in the pro's. Is it Birdy that has a garage in Croydon?

    Cheers all

Have you spoken to carburetor exchange?

  16. have you checked your getting a spark at plugs... if wet fuel is getting thru.

  17. No didn't speak to Carb Exchange zed, just booked it in with Birdy. He's the closest garage to me that I know has the knowledge.

Haven't bothered checking spark as I know they must spark dry as it starts up when left for a while but then dies really quickly.

Now just trying to work out how to get it to him.........

  18. you sure you have all your plug leads the right way around?
    :)
