Hello there, Current owner of a front hinged 76 Westy, looking to convert it for a rear hinged pop top roof . Any seller? Alternatively.. if you know where I can source I d be keen to know.. Please pm! Thanks in advance.
Depending on your budget you can get brand new westy style roofs from www.Spaceroofs.co.uk. We have one fitted to our van (see profile pic).
Hello James, Thanks for your reply, that is one alternative I am considering. However I d favour sourcing an original westy pop top over a replica if possible.. Also have heard that the bed inside the roof isn't as good as the original one. I was kinda struggling to find reviews on it.. But I am definitely not ruling out that possibility.
I got the best of both worlds as I fitted the poptop to a westy tin roof so have the proper westy metal framework. Happy to take any pictures if you do end up considering that option.
Hi @Ayman I have an original rear hinging Westfalia roof and luggage rack on it's way over from the USA & this will most likely arrive in September if you are happy to wait. pm me if interested,
Hi There. I converted my van from a Devon pop top to rear hinged westy. The key to the roof bed in a rear hinged westy is that the whole roof bed area is inside of the pop top hole. This lowers the height of the bed as it sits below the roof height at the edge of the roof rather than on top of the roof skin in the middle. The original westy roof (steel part) is a special pressing rather than a conversion of something existing. The centre roof strengthening brace is flat rather than curved. I bought in a steel westy roof from the states and grafted it in to my van but this was a lot more work than I anticipated! I’ve spoken to a couple of firms that I have seen at shows with vans with converted westy roofs and they both said try to use original fibreglass rather than reproduction if possible. Happy to share pics of my roof conversion if it helps. I’ve not got the fibreglass fitted yet! Cheers
