Rear disc brake conversion.

  1. Hi any body know with a rear disc brake conversion, can a swing axle one be changed IRS one,is it easy.

  2. Is it just the case of fitting new brackets ,or drilling new holes?

  3. You want to just upgrade the brakes, not change the axles?

  4. Ok does a swing axle disc conversion fit a IRS axle.

Why do you feel the need to lock the rear wheels when heavy braking?
It is possible to lock the rear wheels with drum brakes (did it once at 30mph) as the nose dives the rear wheels unweight, hence there being a brake diverter valve even on stock drum brakes.
(Which does however relatively increase the rear braking if the bus is more nose up with a heavy payload)
You dont have ABS on a bus to compensate for the disc brakes viciousness.
Leave a bigger gap, drive more defensively or upgrade the front brakes too.

Paul Weeding did such a conversion on his Silverfish..

have a search for his thread, its on his silverfish post somewhere

  7. Various companies sell such axle / brake kits.

I'm pretty sure red nine design do and possibly creative engineering.

Someone on prototype bay changed their rear drums to Porsche discs and then did loads of calculations that showed they were less effective than the drums they replaced!

    nicktuft and snotty like this.
  8. I can’t think why you would want rear discs on a Bay. Unlikely to improve the braking, which is pretty good anyway.

  9. you can gte an add on bracket and use mk3 golf calipers and a sharan disc with the rear hub machined down. but you will need 15|" wheels at least

@lhu1281 has disks on the rear I seem to recall.

I've seen a full IRS on a split, it was Red9, unsure if they do one one for a bay.

  11. Its on a Beetle.

  12. Ah, ok.

  13. On a Beetle, you should have said.

In my humble, CSP is the dogs wotsits, but you have to be dead serious to want to do it. Lots of moolah.

Why not either, a) fit the much bigger front wheel cylinders off a drum front car, or b) fit type 3 brakes.

I have CSP fronts disks and the larger front wheel cylinders on my rear drums, they are fit and forget upgrade and a serious improvement. They also make up for the brakes bias changes the front disks bring to the party. I also fitted a larger master cylinder.

Other than that, type 3 drums are wider but some simple machining work might be required.

Rear disks really are overkill, the above will quite happily put you thru the windscreen.

I do agree agree drums need a bit more setup work, but rumour has it many kits bring handbrake issues, don't think that's true of CSP, but again lots of moolah.

  14. Am picking up a kit tonight, but in the picture they are fitted to a swing axle, just wanted to know if they would fit an IRS setup. They have only been trial fitted and are unused. Its to go with a Jaymar peddle box and will also have a Hydraulic clutch.

  15. Race car?

  16. Which kind of calipers did you have in mind?

  17. No ,just a quick street car.

  18. Its a conversion kit with the handbrake option.

  19. Could you be more specific what kind of kit?

  20. Not sure of make but its from CSP.
