R hand heater lever (red) feet or face cold air

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by hibiscrub, Feb 2, 2012.

1. My heating nearly works except ....
[li]The right hand red lever (feet or face hot air) only goes half way down. I suspect the cable is too short (I gather this is a common problem). Anyone know where to get one the correct length? [/li][li]The 2 cold air vents (far edge of dash) that blow air out sideways, blow cold air all the time even when the blue lever up and the hot air on. Ie I'm still cold! If I take them out the foam has perished on the flappy things. Do I just need new foam or is something wrong?[/li]
Thanks in advance

the foam around the flaps behind the grille has probably disintergrated, mine is the same as yours i have to do it. as for the levers can't help i have no heating only j tubes.

3. foam flaps looooool....the cold air flaps should open and close while moving ya wiggle stick up n down ......i havent got no foam on mine tho and they close with no air rushing thru.......i havent got red warm for face n legs as mines a crossover

4. isnt there a lever by ya calfs...like a lil white pole with a black nob on ?said the white nun to the black priest

6. Stiff breeze from the fresh air vents (blue lever): foam around intake flaps decomposed as above, also linkage not adjusted properly under the dash.

Direction red lever: you'll need to take a look behind the dash (instruments out). Two cables on a late-late, one to the heat riser by your feet, the other to the diverter under the floor between the seats. Cables may have snapped, not available any more BUT you can make nicely some out of some old long main cables if you've got some (shorten and bend). As I recall, up (double arrows) heat front & rear, centre (one arrow) front, down is defrost to the screen.

Sort it all out & it works nicely (although is a horrible design doomed to stop working someday).

7. The hot air does work and the short R hand lever problem is I think is 'cosmetic' rather than functional.
ie I could put up with it.

The cold air at the same time as hot is a bit of a pain.
Do I need the foam? and
'also linkage not adjusted properly under the dash.' Is this obvious/easy to adjust?

Many Thanks

8. take ya parts and burn em ....open window for cold ,light ya clipper lighter for warmth....jobs a gooden .

9. so on our late , very late panel conversion the center red knob opens both heat control pods , we don't have a heat outlet in the middle , the other red knob diverts between feet and screen and the blue knob opens the vent behind the grill on the front , this is where the foam disappears and needs to be replaced cos if you haven't got foam behind your flap ,( don't lose the little plastic spacer on the control rod ) you will get cold air where ever you put your knob ,fnar fnar

10. "take ya parts and burn em ....open window for cold ,light ya clipper lighter for warmth....jobs a gooden" .

Light my farts??
Surely that's dangerous whilst driving?

11.
12. lose the little plastic spacer on the control rod

?? Not sure what this is and where? ? Lost??

13. Here're your flappy bits. Part 28B easy to break. Linkage is 28A - you can see the screwy adjuster thing.

14. take of the front grill ,standing outside facing the front of the van you wil see the front grill under the windscreen , ( 6 screws ) you will then see two oblong flaps there is a small plastic spacer between the flaps when you take of the flaps you will see on the back where you have lost your foam seal , this needs to be replaced to stop cold air coming in , the plastic spacer is easily dropped and very difficult to find

15. Many Thanks
The foam stuff I meant was on the back of part no. 45! ie inside the van.
I presume the foam is on the back of the flap part no. 1A or ?2

Can I confirm 'sticky draft excluder' is the stuff that's about 1cm wide and comes in rolls ie the same stuff that falls out of my louvered window

Thanks

or alternative is to cut some thin plastic and put it behind the grill and block it completely i'm toying with this idea
