Quieting down an engine.

I was with the Majorhangovers on Sunday listening to engines. He commented on how quiet mine is and I have to agree it is a tad on the quiet side but that's probably because mine is knackered :)

I wondered if anyone has thought about applying sound deadening to their engine??

Sounds crazy but I remember Citroen did it to the rocker covers and tinware on the air cooled 652cc engine in te Visa that was similar to the 602cc 2CV engine. It made a big difference.

I may have a go on the rocker covers when I get some more stuff in.

  5. Think this has answered a question i asked on another thread, my van seems quiet , like its owner its probably Knackered then , their was me thinking i had a rolls royce in the back ::). It does still let me know its their when we go thru a tunnel or pass a large wall tho, that is echo not power i now assume lol. I do love the sound campers make though, but i enjoy mowing the lawn too.

  6. If its quiet then it's likely to be less knackered than a noisy one. Quiet is good. Mine is really 'tappety' but everything is in good order so I ignore it. My zorst is really noisy too, but by choice.

A good original stock exhaust will always be quieter than even a newer stock exhaust. Shrouding one of these engines in anything to make it quieter is a really bad idea. You'll impact on the effectiveness of the cooling, and unless you use something really tough like asbestos you'll increase your fire risk. Remember they need to cool down when you switch off, wrap it up and it won't cool.

  7. FI Type 4s seem quietest, then standard carbs - much quieter than my weber fueled motor with its K+N stlye filter!

  8. Tappet gaps to 0 = quiter engine

...is that the smell of my valves burning....

  10. Guessing my dells will make a bit more of a racket if I ever get around to fitting them!

  11. Mine were loud and throaty enough with small aftermarket pancake filters on. The k+n are 3 times as high and 3 times louder. In a good way, but I do need some interior sound proofing now...

If you fill your engine with sawdust that quiets the engine

  16. Wrap your engine in a duvet, will help with the sound.
