Pulsing brake pedal

  1. Yet another issue !!

When I press the brake pedal, I can feel it being pushed back up against my foot.

I have just had a new master cylinder, front brake pipes, front brake pads and rear shoes fitted.

    What could be the issue??

Been told it could be warped front disks, or off round drums, forcing the fluid back.

    Any ideas guys?

  2. Warped discs or out of round drums are the usual cause.

  3. If you go to a car park out of the way when no one is around
You can clamp your front brake pipes and drive round the car park and apply the brake
If its still doing it the fault lies in the rear if it goes away then the fault lies at the front

  5. It did not do it before. But since having all the brake work done, it is doing it now.
The mechanic doing the work (don't want to name names yet) said, now that he thought that one of the drums was off round and now that he has put new shoes on, they could be touching !! Just annoying when I have spent loads of money and now have more problems !!

Had new pads on the front, so I suppose one of them could be hitting a warped disc. I suspect the drums, but either way it means more money !!

It'll be the drums if it's that obvious.
Discs as one pad goes in one comes out so the effect is more subtle.
If it was ok before maybe the drum didn't seat correctly as suggested up there.^ Or you have wierd aftermarket wheels that crush the drums, more so if the nuts are done tighter than usual. Ask Baysearcher about this - he doesn't bite (everyone).

  7. I have just put new wheels on. SSP polished 5 spokes from Heritage. Could over tightening the nuts, cause an issue ??

Well its a quick simple solution to try. I'll give it a go.

I don't know about any particular wheels I'm afraid. I do know that Baysearcher had a similar problem. Once they are bent, loosening the nuts won't help. I'd be surprised however if SSP are selling wheels that would do this. What you need in a wheel, is for the wheel and the hub to touch around the studs. If they don't, something will bend. Spacers can be used if it's a few mm.

  9. Your mechanic gave you your bus back with that fault! Didnt he test drive it, doesnt he want the business? Unless, off course he hasnt done the work properly. Id jack it up and check his work!
    Cheers

  10. Pulsing brake pedal would indicate warped discs to me, don't think over tightening would do this.Rear drum would not behave like this just because you change the shoes, they would be pulsing before this, drums go oval over a period of time, not straight away. If damage was done by over tightening I would have thought you would have have a pulling on the steering, saying that they would be a poor set of wheels to destort in this way just by a bit too much tightening. Put your old wheels back on and see if it still happens, if it don't its the wheels, if it does its the brakes.

  16. Hi guys. Thanks for the replys.

    Quick recap.

Had pads changed at the front, which were very worn, but did not cause any pulsing.

Had shoes replaced at back. Mech said that there was some leaking onto the shoes on offside. Think it was a bearing issue. He did say that he thought that the drum was off round and the problem may have occured by having new shoes and everything tightened up. There was not asn issue before, but would new shoes cause this..........i don't know ???

Also had master cylinder and new copper brake lines put in.

Think I might start at the back and buy some new drums. Only bummer is that mine are painted to match the bus, so will have to get hold of some more paint for the new ones.

I will try and resit them first, before buying any.

I need to start doing more work myself instead of paying people. So do the rear drums have any retaining clips or threaded holes in the centre or do I just pursuade them off with a hammer ??

    cheers again,

    Simon

Have you checked the system for lentils?

  18. Did you do the clamping off the hoses thing suggested. Would definitely save you some work to isolate which brake is giving you trouble..

  19. Not had a chance to do any checking yet. Hopefully have some time free next week.

That was the 1st thing I checked for. Did not mention it, as I thought it was a standard check. Had a lentil stuck in the brake caliper of my last car and had to use a reverse threaded frozen asparagus tip to dislodge it.
