  1. Hi everyone
New here so thought it was about time to share the progress of our 1972 cross over Bay ... Lola O0

After a weekend away with my family I returned home to find out my Girlfriend ( not happy with buying handbags and shoes while I was away ) had decided we needed a new member to the family and bought a Camper ! lol ... I was errr shocked at first but soon came round to then idea and was excited to meet her ( Lola ). We are both newbies to the VW scene so this was going to be a BIG learning curve for us both ...

The previous owner had done a lot of work but sadly had to sell her due to work/life comitments etc , it had new wheels tyres , new engine and brakes , RR bed in the back and a Folder full of reciepts ... Inc a YouTube clip ! VW Camper 'Lola' walk around

The garage fitted a new rear qtr before they sold her, so luckily the damage was repaired

here's how she looked when we picked her up

We spent many eve's looking on line and through various VW mags decideding on a colour/look for Lola as we thought the mat black and black wheels was just too hard/mean looking for her , we really like the retro colours , Hot Rod look of the 50's etc so that theme influenced where we are now with her.
As for colours , we really like the satin / gloss mix hot rod look ... so thinking about a greeny/grey for the body with glossy gloss roof and bumpers etc in an off white .. hot rod style wheels with white walls and see how it goes

    we were inspired by this

.. On closer inspection the body work wasn't in as good condition as we first thought , but after our first VW show at Dub Freeze we were busy getting quotes on paint and resto , interior etc - think we had carried away with it all at the show ( like you do ) and were missing the whole point ( you need to do the resto yourself , if you can ) .. we recieved the quotes and asfter picking ourselves up off the floor the decision was made to do the work ourselves ... let the FUN begin lol

  3. Some welding before the big MOT day
    [IMG]
    the big day !

    She past ! :D

now to look at the bodywork and do something with that mat black paint .... ( luckily I knew my way around a tub of filler lol )

After hours of blocking its starting to take shape , high and low spots now visable

  4. Days of sanding followed , not having a proper garage and power was proving challenging to say the least lol but I was doing the best I could .. lola was defo causing blood sweat and TEARS ! ... welocme to the world of VW I hear you all say ;D

more sanding , trying to get the sides flat and straight ....
more filling and sanding to shape the rear qtr
    [IMG]

Finally time for some primer ! .... a quick skim on the sliding door , and the rear qtr swage line is back in shape

  13. Now to do something with that old black dash that really doesnt match anymore
    [IMG]
And the steel's have turned up ready for a make over ! HotRod Styleeeeeeeee :)

  14. We wanted to go retro with the colours , so found a VW creamy white for the roof, bumpers, cab( high gloss ) and for body wanted something satin looking and greeny / grey / fawn mix .... we had a paint shop in Brighton Custom mix us a colour slightly based on VW Chinchilla ...
so for the dash the colour had its first outing , gulp .....wasn't sure how it was going to look so fingers crossed ! ... I 2 toned it , blended the air vents and fitted tweeters mounted on deep red leather behind them ... re furbed all the black plastics and fitted the yucky rev counter that was hanging underneath like an after thought into the dash next to the speedo ( and added red LED's for a nice red glow at night :)

And thank you re: dash ! I put so much into that ....loved the Splitty dash and steering wheel look so worked hard to try and get something similar ...prepping the steering wheel took ages

  19. A little distraction ...

After digging this out of the bin , I wondered if I could save it / use it ? ...
The colour was wrong for a start and the chrome dull ... but lets give it a go ! :)
