Problems with Empi 5s on Rear Drums

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Grum, Jan 5, 2014.

  1. Hi,

Has anyone had a problem when fitting Empi 5s??? (On the rear, Drums)
When I 1st fitted them I couldn't even drive the van as it wouldn't budge.

I was advised that spacers may help so I've fitted 5mm spacers.

The wheels still won't turn freely & feels like the brakes are slightly on when driving.

The wheels & tyres aren't catching anywhere.

    Any ideas???

    Your brakes need sorting.

  4. Does the drum spin freely without the wheel on?

  5. One idea would be to get back to whoever advised you to fit spacers on an already oversized rim and tell him/her they're a moron....

  7. But once I'd fitted the spacers I could actually drive the van. Albeit with the sensation of slight braking, nowhere near as bad as before I put them on.

  8. Wanted to get the wheel off all day to try but not been able to.
I have had a really good look all round & there's defiantly nothing catching & the van drive fine last week.

Sounds like the brake cable is tightening up to me.

Yes but the wheels should make no difference to the braking. It does sound as though the cable is pulling on. Try slacking them off at the front adjuster?

  14. Not a clue dude. I'll dig my manuals out.
    Thanks :)

Or just look see if the brake cables are taught now. get below and look at the actual cables give them a tug and see if they have any give. if not they are on.

  16. The only issues usually with Empis is that they are close to the wheel arch (the outer arch). Put standard back on and see if problem is still there.

  18. I know the 2 Bolts you mean. They were removed by the garage who fitted the wheels initially.

  19. I'll have a check tomorrow as it's a proper storm here now.
Hope winters not too long winded this year.
