Problem 2 in France. ..

  1. Think ours is above the heater concertina pipes on the left side. Fairly inaccessible....

  2. Looks the same here

  3. Is the coil really hot? Could be breaking down with heat.

  4. Will check when fails again. But define really hot

  5. Stopped again, coil quite hot but I can touch it

  6. Much hotter than the fan housing, which ought to be cool-ish with the engine fan running. Also check for a tank vacuum again - if you've got a partial breather blockage it might leak down quick enough to restart after a few mins.

  7. do you mean ticking over ?

how hot is the pipe under the carbe?

  8. Yep ticking over. Seemed v hot but didn't touch Now on tow truck

  9. It might be evaporating fuel, before it gets sucked in the cylinders ,in fact to do that you engine will have to be running very hot...

But I am a novice on type 4 motors ...

I do wonder about French petrol. I believe e10 generally runs leaner and therefore hotter... Perhaps there is more ethonal in the French stuff than here (e10 doesn't mean it has 10% ethonal, it means it has between 0% and 10% ethonal).

  11. Do you use the 95 or 98 grade of sans plomb?

  12. I am now 'wild camping' (yer right) outside of the garage for 'diagnostic deman'

  13. Could even be the opposite and be Carburettor icing - though a fuel issue seems much more likely.

IIRC it's a centre mount progressive carb on a type 4, so the inlet manifolds are very long and I don't know if there's any heating.

Hope you get it sorted @SeanOC - Mrs.T sends her best wishes as well.

  14. i think coil could be a good shout, you drive it a bit it gets hot and cuts out, stop for a bit it cools down and then starts and drives fine a gain for bit etc etc etc . just like classic minis when their coil goes.

  15. The coil was hot but I could touch it

  16. Yeah bu tit could be breaking down from the heat, the heat you are feeling could be enough to kill it

I don't see it as icing, both days it was 30-35C+ and the engine bay was dammed warm. I also have a warm air pipe fitted to the base of the carb

  18. Just got a little more interesting, for me at least. I asked the driver where to get water b4 he left and he pointed through a gate. Just went to get water and I am sleeping next to a Cemetery!
May be woosy but glad of the road light above Cyril
    LOL

  19. How do you check if a coil is knackered?

  20. Check the resistance I believe, the heat could be breaking it down, do you have a spare?
