  5. Yep - replace the dizzy cap if possible (or give it a clean if not). It might not be the culprit, but it won't be helping.
Clean off all the crud and if you have a nail file or similar handy, clean up the contacts so they're bright brass on the flat face. Can't believe the French garage didn't do that already.

  8. Does it start?

  9. Still gotta wait on the AA as the roads are too dangerous to take a chance on moving from where I am now.

  10. Yep but it did before, just don't know if the issue is resolved.
Happy to have changed the dizzy though!

  13. looks like somebody has cleaned this recently compared to the dissy cap. Possibly your French garage

  14. Fitted and running, but it restarted just b4 I fitted the new bits so fuel still seems the culprit! Plus no smell of petrol when I tried and it wouldn't start. ..

  15. Have you got a mechanical or electric fuel pump?
You and the AA man could check fuel delivery to the carb by disconnecting the fuel line at the carb, stick the end into a glass jar and run the pump (turn over engine in neutral with coil + disconnected for mech pump). It should be a strong spurt.
Have fire extinguisher handy just in case...

  16. Can only do that when it doesn't start again. But will try then.

  17. Realised that my fuel filter is hidden up behind the push rod tubes etc & I can't even see it, is it normally located there?

  18. Mechanical pump BTW

Usually between the tank and fuel pump, close to the starter motor. Stick your phone up there to get a photo!

Did it judder to a halt under high speed or high load (up hill) - when fuel demand couldn't be met perhaps?

  20. Have to check later as no room here and it's very hot under there.
Update: Engine has been running for 25 minutes without a problem but now cut out n won't restart. Hopefully the tow guys will show up shortly and we can check the fuel.
