I'm looking for a set of leads for standard 1700 type 4 . I think the ones I'm looking at are made from gold if price is owt to go by . Any recommendations for a decent set?
I've just had my twin carbs re built and after install I've found the engine has got the shakes . No air leaks so going to try new leads but Im going to get rid of the points first . Would I need different leads after electronic ignition instal?
I usually make up my own leads it works out cheaper ....if the only thing that you have changed is a carb rebuild then that is where the issue is
The engine started to shake before carb rebuild. I've sorted all possible air leaks . Now going to start with the basics.
The shake started before I rebuilt carbs . But they could be out of balance. Going to get it up to LVH Engines for paul to set it up .
It's pretty easy to do if you get a carb balancer. In fact although Haynes manual advises against it, if you twiddle the adjustment rod on the right hand carb, you might be able to fix it yourself, without a balance instrument, that's if it is out of balance. Just make sure you can return it to the starting point if it's not that. What I found was it was running really rough, almost like running on 3 cylinders, but just by listening to the engine as you adjust, it comes into alignment and sounds right as both carbs are opening the same amount.
Spark plug leads lying near the spark plugs or just resting on top of the plug can cause the cylinder to fire and misfire. On my T1 I use Taylor Spiro Pro silicone leads .. seemed to withstand extreme heat (flames) without changing.. and not too expensive around £30 a set from Stateside Tuning a few years back.
Carb balancers are great gadgets. I bought a synchrometer off ebay with a rubber adapter to balance the twin su carbs on my mgb which was running a bit unevenly. Very easy to use and once the carbs had balanced air flow, the engine performance has been amazing and the engine runs quiet and smooth. The synchrometer is shown on a few YouTube clips.
