Timing was a bit off but nothing major. Nudged it to 28degrees max and 7.5 at idle. Seemed to run well judging by when I passed it on the M5!

  5. Well after leaving the fantastic Doug I was diverted off the M4 (closed) so made my way down to A303 / M3 which was then closed as well so finally got home at 330am so 11 hour journey ! Engine never faltered (stalled at idle couple of times) and still dipstick almost burning hot so might book in for oil change, general check over and maybe a rolling road tune which maybe a good time to be having ?

Just want to say a massive thank you to Doug and Barn and all the others who have helped and supported me - what a fantastic forum and an amazing example of good old fashioned community spirit ! Brilliant !

I'd start with a full service and oil change.
Anyone know how stable timing should be with electronic ignition? It was probably jumping 10 degrees.
Also, it seems to run hot for a bit, then cool for a bit; any ideas?

  8. We came back from Cornwall on Friday. Some of those hills are a long slog. Our 2l auto struggled on several of them and it did get hot - though it only has 3 gears to choose from.
Traffic on A30 and A303 was terrible and the rain didn't help. Got home to Kent approx 1:30am after a 14hr drive.

  9. 14hours? Feel better about my 11 now!

  10. I did Cornwall to Kent in 6 hours.

    Do I win? :)

  11. We did Cornwall to Teesside in about 36 hours, minus a few for a eventful night in Exeter services, a few more for running out of fuel, and leaky oil switch and a few other things. :)

  12. In a golf tdi?

  13. Nope.

before I fitted the extra oil cooler my 1641 woild run all day quite happily at 118 to 122degrees C which is too hot by dipstick.
But I would use a VDO dipstick temperature gauge to tell me when to back off a fraction.

  15. Was thinking of getting the VDO for peace of mind. How much did the oil cooler drop the temp by ?

It drops it by 20 degrees .. often sits at 80 which is the thermostat opening temperature.

The timing scatter is probably also due to the distributor advance mechanism getting worn and also if the drive dog is getting worn at the bottom.
Just changed back to an old Bosch because the Chinese distributor I bought to replace it needed its advance pulling back from 40 degrees centrifugal.

The old Bosch shows this kind of timing scatter which the new Chinese copy did not.
