It’s the faceless way they govern that gets me. No one person seems to be accountable for the decision to implement these rules it’s always something that just seems to come into force.

  2. We’ve had all of the roads around where I live changed to 20mph. To be honest near schools and old people’s homes etc I totally get it. But some of the roads are almost main roads. So far I’ve not met a single resident who wants blanket speed restrictions and I’ve met no one who’s got any idea who’s idea it was or on what basis they authorised it.

Like you say it’s just another faceless regulation that appears over night.

Most towns have a big enough market place for a 20 man Scaffold to deal with them ....what is possibly alarming is that the number of folks to watch would equal to the middle ages .

Here we have angle sided speed bumps that appeared a couple of years ago. My car has been through 2 front coils and countless bulbs since (I changed the side lights to LEDs it was getting so ridiculous). They are guaranteed to throw your tracking out, whatever speed you do - and it's the small, narrow track, eco-friendly cars that are worst affected! One has now disappeared, presumably embedded in the underside of an invalid carriage, leaving scarred tarmac that will develop a lovely pothole come winter.

Oh I do sound like a complete old whingeing git :D

  5. OK, my appeal was refused. Here's their reasoning, which seems quite legitimate to me:

I have enclosed a photograph of the sign in relation to where you had parked, which
states ‘Cars & M/cycles only within marked bays.’ Unfortunately, your vehicle does
not fall within this category as it is classed as a campervan - it is not intended solely
for the transportation of people and has been constructed or adapted for the
purposes of sleeping and cooking - so you are not permitted to park in these
    particular bays.

A “motor car” means a three or four wheeled mechanically propelled vehicle (not
being a goods vehicle of an unladen weight of more than 1.5 Tonnes (30 cwt) or a
public service vehicle) constructed or adapted for the carriage of not more than 8
passengers, and excludes any vehicle designed or adapted for sleeping purposes.

The first road restriction of this nature was put in place in 2005, at the request of the
residents, specifically to prevent pickup trucks, vans or campervans parking in this
road. This restriction is now in force on a number of roads in the area. Vehicles that
do not fall into the category of “Cars and Motorcycles” would need to find alternative
    parking nearby.

The possible vehicle class restriction signs look like these:

The only class that allows camper vans is the third one. If that one is missing and one or more of the others are present, don't park there!

For reference, much of Swanage's residential street parking is "no camper vans". You can't park a camper van around the tennis courts, but you can park slightly up the hill on Northbrook Road.

Dorset County Council have a handy map of all on-street parking restrictions: https://www.dorsettraffweb.co.uk/main.html (zoom in to see restrictions, click one for details).

  6. Seems reasonable.

  7. But not sensible...
Never seen a camper/caravan sign in all the years I've been riding/driving .

  9. In this case it's clearly because local residents became annoyed by large campervans and motorhomes parking outside their homes. Which is fair enough, IMHO.
