@paradox thats the wrong roller you need the smooth sponge roller, also what paint are you using, as you know my wife did my camper at the start of the summer with Rustoleum combicolor, I’ve left it until now ( 4 months ) to harden and now I’m sanding with 600 then 800 dry then I’m using 1500 wet, 2000 wet then G3 then G10 and then finally a good quality polish the finish is very good I’ll stick some pictures up when I’m home from fishing,
    Bazza

  2. It’s not an enamel paint like rustoleum bazza
    It’s a polyurethane based paint I’m sure

It doesent behave like enamel believe me I’ve used plenty of enamels over the years

I was using this type of foam roller as you would with enamel [IMG]

One set from one shop went all floppy and crap within a min of being loaded with paint another set from a different shop resisted the floppyness for about 5 mins but then the foam becomes detached from the plastic insert

I think it being xylene based it’s flashing off very quickly so won’t flow or give time to work it.

    This type of roller

I used with a polyurethane xylene based textured bits of rubber paint a while ago and the roller sleeve stayed fine

I thought if it’s going to texture anyway maybe this type of roller will allow me to get a more even finish

  4. i feel your pain , would you not be better to gto back to enamel paint , if thats going to give ye that grief , if your adding thinners to the paint the thinners will melt the foam roller , ask me how i know :oops::cheers:

  5. I used the same type of paint para and it said no more than max 5% xylene thinners if rollering/brushing.
It was pretty thin anyway but virtually just waving the roller over the xylene thinners caused them to go floppy and roll off the roller handle.

  6. If I can’t get this stuff to play nicely then I will be going back to enamel paint

I’ve half a tin left though so It’s worth trying a few things differently

  7. Do you have any pics of how yours turned out?

Here’s the finished sliding door, im very pleased with how it’s turned out, it took me about an hour to wet sand and polish by hand it would of been a lot quicker if I had a car polisher

  9. Good stuff enamel it’s a pleasure to work with.
This stuff I’m using lured me in with it’s quicker drying times but it’s awful to work with

  10. Mine was like thick gloop when I did the first coat and I thought that was the problem
I thinned it down till it just poured nicely of the mixing stick for the second coat but it didn’t make any difference.

So tonight I’ve thinned it right down so it’s just a bit thicker than water.
It warns against thinning it too much but I thought its worth a try.

I brush painted a small section of steel tube with a brush and it did seem to flow a lot better

I’ll see how that looks tomorrow and if it’s ok and it’s not raining
Then I’ll give it a go over the top of the previous coats on the arch panel using a foam roller from wickes to see how it turns out.

The thing is I can see it being a good protective paint that dries quickly if I can just get it to apply with a nice finish.

When it’s sprayed from a rattle can it leaves a finish I’m happy with

  15. If only it was as simple as that

  16. That looks a nice finish. I still need to colour sand and polish mine as it was painted in the middle of the heatwave so literally dried on the roller or brush while it was being done.
It seems pretty easy to sand by hand. I know 2k is a PITA to sand by hand as it dries so hard.

  17. youl get there in the end, you ve not let anything beat ye yet

It looks like the thinners is reacting with the red oxide you put on the bare metal. I've had that problem before with spraying 2k primer onto hand painted red primer. I've also seen it when spraying over stonechip.

  20. I haven’t used red oxide fella

It’s the nature of this paint to texture like that
It doesent flow out like more traditional paints
I just need to find the best way to minimise the texture when rolling it on.

I’ve already made an improvement by really thinning it out and using a wickes foam roller that doesn’t get affected by the xylene.

This stuff is like a paint version of stonechip
