Onboard Computer Diagnosis unit....

  1. So was out in the bus today planning on doing a bit of fiddling and it was just too cold. So I abandonded that but not before looking at a cluster of wires going into a plastic unit on the top right of my engine bay. Wonder what it is? I thought. Some of the wires have been cut by the po and one has a sort of round plug connector on the end.

haines manual has a picture that matches and says its an onboard diagnosis unit that vw could plug a comput into.

Anyone ever seen one of these units? Ever use it? Ever seen the computer that plugs into it? Can it be removed without screwing the electrics. Looks all yellowy and naff to me and the wires sticking out annoy me.

Took the bus for a nice 20 mile drive thou even though it was cold. Felt good!!!

  2. I'd leave it where it is.

It's completely useless, even in its day. Even VW stopped using it.

  3. It mocks me.

It's an ingenious piece of kit. Does all sorts like test the heated rear window. I removed mine recently because it was messy and had caused a fire in its life. There are only 2 wires that run out of the engine bay.

The computer itself was very sophisticated for a vehicle with the philosophy of build it simple. It test and checks things like tracking too but you need to make sure the tyres are pumped correctly. The write up in the Haynes book says it all and is quite a funny read. I highly recommend it.

The rest of them are connected to the rear lights, battery and alternator. It's really simple to cut out.
