oil use...

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by gertie, Oct 2, 2011.

  1. Hi All - is there a norm for the amount of oil you would expect to use on a weekend...answers probably in the question! I know it shouldn't be much but on a hot weekend with some traffic jams would it be reasonable to do 200 miles and go between the fill lines on the dip stick? There's some oil on the outside of the engine but I suspect most is going out the exhaust.....

Probably an engine rebuild over the winter but thought I'd get an idea first

Thanks in advance for your valued comments

our t4 motor doesnt use any oil that you would notice...it has a very very slight drip from the gearbox end of the motor but we have done ~2000 miles & touch wood it is still at the top mark on the dipstick

  3. oil leaked is much different to oil burned! a good engine that leaks abit of oil can last for ever if topped up regularly where a oil burner is in need of a teardown sooner rather than latter alot of manafactures say once a engine is run in 1pint per 1000miles

You should be able to see if you are burning that much - I would guess a little cloud of blue smoke would be evident with that amount of oil

  5. that's a litre of oil over 200miles... that is a little high ;) I'd normally expect to do 1000 to 2000miles on a litre in an aircooled, ideally you don't want to be using more that half a litre in 3000miles (that way you're only putting oil in at the service interval)

if you're not dropping it, and it's mostly being burned, then it's as you've already said, time for a rebuild :)

  6. the strange thing is there isn't any puffs of smoke - either when under load up or down hills. If I stop and restart quickly there has been a puff of smoke once but other than that nothing to look that alarming? I guess this is via the guides. BTW its a type 2 2.0 litre fuel injected. cheers

  7. Agree with a pint in a thousand, that was the old adage back in the day, we have used our 2litre type 4 over about 2500 mls this year fully laden and have topped up a little but bearing in mind its the orig engine and had always been driven fully loaded with kids, camping gear and bikes x 4 i dont reckon its bad, as my father in law said, a drop of oil is cheaper than a rebuild!

I would say dont get too uptight about oil usage, just keep an eye on it. Shame its not like my Volvo C70, 18000 mls without needing oil!

i did over 300 miles this weekend and never used a drop, also i've done about 800 since i did the oil change and it's still clean and bang on the line.
