Oil relief piston, how tight should it be!!!!!?

  1. Right so fitting brand new oil relief pistons and springs to my new case and it feels very tight to the bore. Does go in but even when greased feels tight. Measures 0.001 bigger than what came out of the old case. If it’s meant to be a snug fit then great. Any thoughts??

  2. Upon reflection the new parts are empi items which came as part of the oil cooler kit.......am I better getting some new original parts as my thoughts are a brand new motor with good oil pressure shouldn’t need uprated oil relief valves, standard should be ok right?

  3. Yes. As a general rule, EMPI parts aren't very wonderful. Stick with the stock pistons and springs if they're in good shape. Give them a polish with grey Scotchbrite.

  4. Yeah I’m feeling that tbh, might just get some new springs. Pistons out of the old motor are in good shape tbh

  5. Even new springs might be dodgy, depending on who you get them from. I'd stick with the old ones.

An older engine case may well have a wear step in the oil relief bores that will result in the piston jamming hard. Its worth checking for this .. emery paper / files may be needed.

The general rule you should apply is that "unless it comes off in pieces or it is worn out you should try to re-use original parts when possible"

EMPI are an annoying company, as sole supplier of some items which are OK in Beetle engines but wrong for busses.

Although some of their products like cylinder heads turn out to be quite good..

  7. This is a band new case and had these relief valves come as part of the cooler kit, tbh I wouldn’t normally buy empi for any critical internal parts but they look ok just oversized. Gona try and find some good quality original spec parts for this new motor if I can. Thinking about it I get the feeling these parts are aimed at people trying to up oil pressure on an older engine where the bore is probably a little bigger so these are a little bigger. No good for a new case.
