They've now removed genuine VW from the listing

  2. Ooowh - Moggy Convertible - Mrs Cunny would like one but I have an MG instead

  3. Old English White with red interior and hood. That's the one to have. Not many come up for sale so pricey. MG is more fun.

  4. Yes that's the one Mrs C wants - I would have to add a 1275 engine, 5 speed box and disc brakes if I were to swap for my MGA - one like that overtook me whilst I was only doing 60 on the M6 going to Leighton Hall last year.

Ha ha :) just looked at this old thread to check what oil I need as I've still got the same old leak nearly a year later! About to top up with the oil I've discovered in the garage

Woo hoo! I’m bringing this thread back to life as I still haven’t fixed my leaking steering box  I wonder if the part recommended by @rock65 will do these trick?

Does anyone know the vw part number for the ‘seal’ please? It’s a LHD.

I thought I may attempt it in new lockdown :)

  9. Steering box may have been leaking slowly for some time. I would give it a good wipe off and top it up with sae 80 90 gear oil. Inside the cab you should see a round metal cowl at the bottom of the steering column, with 2 screws fixing the cowl to the cab floor. If you undo the screws, you can pull the cowl up the column to see the top of the steering box below where you should see a plastic filler hole bung. It will probably be cruddy under there so clean the area and pull out the bung and with a torch you should see the oil level. Top it up to just below the top. Mine leaked a bit when I bought the van, I topped the oil up and it hasn't leaked since.

While there check the rubber puck for cracking or splitting. Mine was dangerously split and good thing I discovered that before the steering failed.

At least with the box full of oil you could check the extent of the leak. I haven't done it but I thought renewing the oil seal is quite a difficult job. Also I understand that new LHD steering boxes are available at a price.

Keith who originally did the repair kit knew the sizes ( obviously) ...I'll see if I can find the info.

  12. ^this. Seal size is standard, and should be on here somewhere.

Taking everything off is pretty straightforward, but you'll need a ball-joint splitter for the drag link joint and a hefty puller to get the drop arm off the box...
