Oil in Air filter/box - what's up?

  1. Yup. It's brassy colour. So engine out and heads off to see more?

Well engine out and one head of for sure, to remove the other is a five minute job so you may as well, could be a relatively easy fix

  3. That certainly looks like an ex-valve guide.

Interesting the adjuster screw on the "dry" rocker looks quite chewed like its stiff.
Maybe the whole problem started with a lack of oil feeding up the push rod reducing the amount of oil appearing on that rocker or the oil drilling in the rocker is blocked.
Then the screw is drier and so stiffer to turn. That also means less oil in the valve guide, combined with a hot No3 cylinder, caused by a bit of dirt in the carb making it run lean after sitting around.
But the general hot gases grime in the cylinder head says things have not been 100% for a while.

  5. I hadn't noticed the adjusting screw being any tighter than the others to be honest. Probably just a remnant of the ham fisted Mexican mechanics who used to work on the van before it was imported 9 years ago. The vans also been running too rich lately, definitely not lean.

I use the van every day, but only for short trips mainly, so I wonder if this has lead to the oil drilling in the rocker getting blocked with gunge from cold running over winter.

Anyhow, I hope to have the van towed to a garage where I can get the engine out in the dry and have a proper look in the next few days.

  6. Right- an update! the head is off. The valve guide has broken up and jammed exhaust on no3 open. Luckily there doesn't seem to be any debris that's hit the piston or scored the bore. The valve has not snapped, just jammed.
Looks like the valve guide has had an issue for a while (i've not noticed any loss of power though) as it has worn the valve guide hole and eventually chewed it up. So new head by the looks of it - could be worse.
The MOT is due shortly too - hope the bloody MOT man doesn't find too much wrong as well!
