  3. A small tug boat capsized last night, never had the Solent down as a dangerous stretch of water

A major search and rescue operation is underway in Southampton Water tonight (Monday) following the capsizing of a small boat.

Red Funnel ferries, Cowes and Calshot RNLI lifeboats, Police launches, tugs and the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter from Lee-on-Solent are currently working together to locate at least one missing sailor.

Other sailors on board the capsized vessel – a small tug named Asterix – have been successfully rescued and taken to safety.

The captain and crew of the Red Eagle car ferry announced at around 20:10 that they were turning the boat around as they neared Southampton to respond to the emergency and have since launched a search boat with two crew members on board.

At 20:20 an RNLI lifeboat from Cowes was launched to assist the operation alongside Calshot RNLI lifeboat. Both remain on scene off Fawley.

Red Funnel have advised the 21:00 sailing will be delayed as a result of the search and rescue operation.

Got to be honest, I assumed its maritime law that the nearest vessel responds to a SOS call whatever they are doing?

Is it? That's good. I thought it was a sailor solidarity thing. They found the sailor alive but with hypothermia.
I think in France and Spain vehicle drivers have a Duty of Care to stop and help other road users. Not sure if folk take any notice of it tho!

It is maritime law that you must go to a vessel in distress, as far as I'm aware.

That's going to be tricky, and a bit dangerous for me, I haven't even got a boat.
