So this issue reared its ugly head last year and @1973daisey and I changed various leads to the starter etc. However its back. In essence - and this makes no difference if the van is hot or cold has just been driven or left overnight - now when I turn the key I get nothing. As if the battery is flat. No sounds of any kind. It starts up straight away with a push. All I can think is one of the following: The bush in the gearbox is phooked jamming the starter Earth somewhere is dodge (already checked these) Hot start issue though it does it all the time Ignition switch is at fault Starter is knackered (2 years old Bosch) Solenoid is knackered The flywheel is damaged jamming it Any other ideas?
I think if it was a physical jam of some sort you would see a dimming of dash lights (and headlights if on) and perhaps be able to hear the solonoid click over. It sounds like you have none of these so would indicate an electrical issue. Have you tried bridging the solonoid and positive wire to try and spin the starter?
No I havent tried bridging yet. But the RAC guy did try last year and it didnt work. I will have another go.
Put a jump lead on the earth on the batt to gearbox buddy can't remember if we tried this or not was ages ago now bud I'm going away on wed bud so can't pop over help dude sorry bud sounds like bad earth up bolts up on starter and gearbox and bat earth to
When mine went, it was both the ignition switch and the starter motor at around the same time. Worn out ignition switch reduced the power to the solenoid then gave up completely. And then bridging the connections on the back of the solenoid did nothing sometimes and started it other times. So I connected a wire to the spare tag on the back of the starter and led it into the engine bay to touch on the battery+ so I could fiddle with the throttle at the same time as engaging the starter from the engine bay when it worked... Once it started, I drove to GSF and bought a starter. Of course it started on the key outside GSF so I could get home and replace the starter.
I had a new starter from J K after a few weeks it just stopped working like yours Took to bits it was the brushes inside the starter jammed in the guide tubes As not a bit job maybe worth a look Peter
No, the starter motor only has one bearing and needs the bush in the bell housing to support the other end so don’t try to run it out of the bus.
