I recently noticed what sounded like a blowing exhaust from cold , I think it disappears once warmed up. I’ve recently replaced the exhaust ( standard on a 1600) and it looks like all joints and gaskets are sound , the noice seems to be coming from the near side heat exchanger but it’s very hard to tell, the flange and gaskets on the block look to be sound enough too . Could and do heat exchangers blow apart inside at all , if they do is it common and likely to be the case here or not??
If it blows apart inside the HE you would deffo smell exhaust fumes . Have you a carbon monoxide detector .
Good call. Loose heads do quieten down as they warm up and expand. Check for soot or oil between head and cylinders
Whilst you`re under there @Dazza check the valve clearances , same symptoms as when i burnt out an exhaust valve ....
I guess if it’s one of the exhaust valves blowing it’s going to need stripping down smartish? Got a week away in it next week
Check `em first mate , might be a red herring but those were identical symptoms - spent a week trying to fathom out what i thought was an exhaust leak but the van still ran well - went onto 3 in about week but you might catch it in time if it`s just an adjustment ...
Found this , looks likely as it gets to being the culprit Sheared off stud , maybe been like that for a while ( maybe since it was built) and the heads have now warped - torqued the rest up , adjusted valves both sides which weren’t too bad anyway , noise seems to have subsided , fingers cross it gets me away for the week next week before I have to pull the engine Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I’ll probably have to look at that when I strip it down which won’t be any time soon - I’ve got a few trips planned before that so hopefully it’ll hold up until then , I appreciate it may give the heads chance to warp more but hey ho
The head may not have warped - why do you think it might have? I have my doubts whether it’ll last with one stud missing.
I just assumed that maybe the studs been snapped for a while looking at the rust on the end of it and it’s taken a while to show symptoms - possibly - now the head may have warped , all other studs were tight though
If it’s snapped there, maybe corrosion. Can’t think of anything else. Usually, the threads pull out of the case on the 10mm jobs, rather than the stud snapping.
Never been checked in the 5 years the engine has been in so not overtightened by me so I think it must have been overtorqued and possibly partially sheared by the builder and stress , vibration, heating & cooling has finished it off
