Noisy rear end

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by SweeneyTodd, Jul 27, 2019.

  1. I hate posting in mech tech because it means I have a problem!
My problem is this.... Picked up the van last week just to give him a run or two before we venture to Tenby in August, when I set off for home I could hear a strange clippity clop sort of noise. No it's not the horses!! I think it may be the rear bearings ( although these were done last year) because the noise becomes faster (less clippity clop more a drum roll on a big bass drum) & very LOUD at speed. Am I correct in thinking I've got to do the rear bearings again or could it be something else? I can't rule out anything rattling about inside like a pan or something because the van is chokka with stuff. I've been under & everything looks in order & tight so..... open to suggestions on what to check!

  2. Just waiting for the "beans for breakfast" replies.

You could check to see if the rear brakes are rubbing somewhere - mine were with loose rust inside the drum

Bearings : jack up, handbrake off does wheel wobble.

Brakes : handbrake lever in rear brake assembly coming loose and hitting studs on hub.

CV joints generally if you put it in gear with the wheel in the air and engine stopped , does the wheel end of the axle rotate more than the gearbox end ?
    Also clicking changes on corners.

Are your wheel nuts really loose ? You wouldnt be the first ?

    CV joints coming unbolted ?

Try turning wheel by hand when it is up in the air.

Dry cv's sound horrendous. A quick remedy without doing too much is to crawl under the bus, grab a shaft and pull it backwards and forwards towards the gearbox and wheel respectively a few times. Repeat on the other side.
Usually this is enough to redistribute any dry grease left in there and the noise should quieten.

  5. Cheers guys all the above on the check list. @mikedjames I did have a single click per revolution when reversing which sounded like it was coming from the near side but that has since ceased, so could this be a symptom of bearings or drive shafts?

I'm going with a cv joint as well, they can make a racket.

I would go for cv joints. Try the massage if the boot isnt split.

  14. #€%*$*%€#*#! Why do these things always happen 2 weeks before we go camping? Van is up in the air having done the old shake your drive shaft dance which made no difference. Did passenger side, checked wheel nuts, jacked him up, handbrake off, no wobble & no noise when spinning .... all is good there! Driver side jacked up, was evident immediately the bearings have gone ..... that's just great! Every year this van has something for me! :(:(

Oh well, on the bright side, at least its not your drive shafts.....:D

  16. Noisy rear end is no more & I can now hear myself think! Fully fixed with new rear bearings & a replacement hub, so all good. Aaah! The quiet life!
Cheers for all your input
