no start ! (ignition switch ?)

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by mrlhayes, Apr 19, 2018.

  1. usual no start after winter lay up .. (78 westy carb not FI)

dead no click on starter solenoid / 12.7 volt at battery / fuel pump ticks over / 12 v at coil
starter solenoid kick in when hooked up to 12 v and good 12.7 v at starter "battery" cable

moved to cab and split the connector under the dash ...

"fat" black and red nothing from the ignition end when key set to crank ???
on the other side of plug (off to the starter) short to earth (but I assume just running thru the solenoid coil ?
no short when disconnected at the starter solenoid end ? so I think the cable run out to the back of the van is ok ? (thank god ?)

A/ feels like the ignition switch ? any more I can do to confirm / check before I start to break it down ?
B/ any tips on threads to changing the ignition switch ??

    cheers !

Short the solonaid to the starter to see if it the starter spins, make sure its in neutral.

  4. thanks a lot ... have shorted the starter and it kicks over ... I will try a temporary hot switch first ...

  5. I had similar issue , checked all obvious items , and the problem was the solenoid spade connection that I thought was ok

  6. Start with the simple stuff which for me would be remove all the cables from the solenoid & starter & give em a good wire brushing! Also check the big cable that goes to your battery, battery earth strap & the earth strap from your gearbox again removing and wire brush! I used a drill with wire brush wheel on the end & when your happy these are all shiny then work your way back up the circuit.

  7. Be careful with cheap/modern ignition switches, I have got through three so far, once I even broke down in the middle of a roundabout with no ignition whatsoever.
Just fitted a genuine vw second hand switch, and a hot start relay setup, and so far it seems to be sorted.

  8. thanks will have another run thru .. not in a rush to do the ignition switch looks a bit of a pig of a job ..

  9. Not too bad once you get stuck in.
