No one knows

  1. Hi to all, bit of a mystery, driving at 60mph everything good and the alternator light comes on, then the engine cuts out. The fan bolts have sheared, (2.0 CJ engine pancake) so next day I pull the engine and the fly wheel has also sheared off, but the engine turns over by hand with no issues. I have even stripped the engine down and split the casing, and nothing is a miss in anyway...... confused is not the word. Any ideas??

Maybe the flywheel bolts were over tightened and weakened ...and eventually went . a fair bit of torque on those bolts i would say .

Any catching on the case/ gearbox, starter motor disengaging property?

  4. Was it the single bolt in the fan hub that snapped or the 3 that held the fan to the hub? Have you ever taken the pulley off the fan as they are balanced ?

  5. I did a top end fresh three years ago and it has never missed a beat, all three bolts and the locating pin had sheared at the fan end, and one bolt on the fly wheel end is very blue. There is a scoring mark at 11 o’clock on the bell housing, and when it happened there was not a sound or bang, it was like I had just turned the engine off.

Unless you went round smearing dirt on that, you either over torqued the bolts a long time ago or it got a smack like dropping the engine when the bolts were done up..

When the flywheel fell off, the crank could then move back, producing massive endfloat only limited by side impact of normally non bearing surfaces. and the fan pulley could then rub .

Be aware the engine may have run with rods at a strange angle to the crank for a while as the pulley protruded, may have hit things inside, the crank may have bounced back and forth. My T1 made awful clattering noises when the flywheel came loose...

    Probably worth looking inside...
