NewtoVW/tinworm - Slow restoration thread.

  1. ....sounds interesting ....to late for mine though, although I do remember putting a bit of silent coat in the engine bay above the metal panels that hold the 'sound proofing'! in place

  2. "The metal panels".. Like a 1" pepper pot holed pattern in them? This stuff is 20mm thick foam of some sort with the silver front and a sticky back to them, I'm going to see if it will squash between the ceiling of the engine bay and those panels. Like I said it's designed for under the bonnet of a car so heat should not be a problem.

  3. My engine panels are hardboard. Metal would be a better option and also replacing the original VW insulation.

I drew up a template for these to help cut them (for those people with warped or sodden hardboard versions) although it's for a bay with an inspection hatch

  5. I will probably do the same eventually. I hope to return to the engine bay in two weeks.

I should have siad, you're more than welcome to a copy of the drawing if it's of use!

  7. That would be very handy, Andy! Cheers. :D

  8. Not much of an update but I have promised to add bits and pieces to this thread..
Rear left wheel arch just needs joggling on the top edge and a small patch made for the inner.

I don't want to weld it in until I finished removing the PO Repair? to the sill.
The repair was fixed in place with rivits, self tapping screws and a few tacks of weld but was a nightmare to remove, four hours lying under the bus but it's nearly clean now.
The jacking points on that side have been fixed by the PO as well.:(
    [IMG]
I'm going to remove them all as the steel welded in place is only welded to the rusting metal of the original points.

  9. I took a small risk today and bought another part that I'll need for the bus in the future. It's a rock and roll bed off e-bay. £96 posted. It was described as shop soiled, and for parts only as the box is missing and the seller couldn't garrantee that all the parts were there.
I studied all of the pictures and all the main parts are present..Maybe just a few nuts and bolts missing.
Sad I know but very excited, should arrive wed/thurs. I do like a bargain.

Sorry... It's the first interior part that I've bought.

Bolts are only finger tight.. Just to see how it looks.

Seems OK..Never built a R+R bed before.. Have I built it OK?

The back seems a bit laid back? Plus, my misses would go bananas if I scratched that floor ;)

  12. The back pulled up into place when I tightened the bolts up, this was really just to see if it was all there and a trial run at building it as there were no instructions and I'd never built one before.. Also when I measured the width I hadn't pushed the center bars in far enough (It's an ajustable width bed) when I pushed them in an extra couple of inches, it squared it off.
I'm not sure yet but when it gets fixed in the bus, I might either drill small holes in the underside where the center movable bars fit and put a small self tapping screw in or when the width is decided just weld a tack to each bar.
Ref the floor.. Point taken.. If I weld it, I promise not to do it in the living room

There's a right up in this months Volksworld on how to fit a Rusty Lee bed. I haven't read it, but it may have a few helpful pics

  14. Saturday, I offered the bed up to the bus just to see what's what.. I also had an idea of using the original front panel as the kick panel under the bed. Maybe fit some speakers in the head light bowls?

  15. I really like that idea, I've never seen it done before.

  19. Wow, thanks for the positive comments about the bed, I'm chuffed that you like it :D I want to fit the original head light surrounds and maybe some of those stainless steel mesh grills to protect the speakers.. Also a VW badge in the center and then colour code it the same colour as the bus (when It's painted)
Shame it's such a short panel because I was going to put in two double electric sockets where the low indicators would have been.

  20. Why don't you fit headlights for interior lighting?
