Recently made the leap into T2 ownership and bought what I thought to be Late Bay May be irrelevant for question but now believe my purchase MAY be Crossover - Registered in Oct '72. Current running on 5 1/2J x 14 " wheels - my question is, would I need to make any adjustments to allow it to run on 5 1/2J x 15" , Offer on Heritage parts at moment with £100 off a set of SSP wheels , tempted by several sets but not if I need to do more than go to Kwik-Fit to buy tyres and have them switched with existing wheels All advice welcome
Heritage should have info about what the wheels are suitable for, however, they should be a straightforward swop, you will need slightly lower profile with 15in wheels to keep speedo accurate. Someone will be along with a link soon to calculate tyre profile required.
^ splits and earl y bays have 5x205 pcd (sometimes called "wide 5") where a 72 or any other late bay would have 5x112 pcd, (narrow 5). make sure you get the correct tyre size so you're not increasing rolling radius, and get tyres that are correctly load rated for the vehicle.
And don't take it to kwikfit. They'll lift it up by the jacking points and fold your bus up like they're doing origami... That's a bit tongue in cheek but make sure you show them where to lift it if you're not 110% sure your jacking points will handle it.
Thanks to contributors - Kwik-fit just used as example to indicate I wanted something that'll not need additional work - have already found a VW Campervan specialist that I'd use. Photos added - sorry not particularly great ones . How would I tell wide 5 from narrow 5 ? Anyone got measurements I could check against ?
Does it have a fuel flap with a non locking filler cap, or a just a locking filler cap and no flap? Nice looking Bus.
Be wary of “camper van specialists” as well! Make sure you go on recommendation rather than just who you can find. There are some right shysters about. Always worth asking in here for recommendations from people in your area.
That's a very early Late on the very end of the cr0ssover, it will have 5x112 pcd, (narrow 5) wheels.
Mines on 16s with 205/80 all terrain tyres, speedo is spot on accurate when I’ve compared it to gps! Why anyone wants bigger wheels and smaller profile tyres baffles me, what’s the point? Smaller sidewall will give worse ride and won’t fill the arch any better if it’s the same radius
Thanks Baysearcher - guy in question has been recommended by colleague with a T25 and is mentioned on a few local VW Facebook groups so credentials are sound.
It's a very early Late Bay...can make ordering right parts " fun". There's a thread somewhere on here where we all compared our "differences ". As a new member, be aware that wording your posts with as much innuendo as possible is compulsory!
