Hi all I'm new here and am just embarking on the search for a van, so I have nothing to introduce except myself. I just wanted to warn you that I'm sure I'll be asking all sorts of daft questions shortly - although from just a few hours reading through the threads on here I have learnt so much, so thank you all! I've seen a couple of vans I am interested in, so if people don't mind I'll start a thread in the relevant area to get the views of those more experienced! I'm from Leicestershire, by the way, so any advice on buying locally or, when the time comes, VW-friendly MOT & repair, would be most gratefully received
Welcome aboard from Northamptonshire There's lots of great advice on here so read up and take on as much info as you can. When you see a bus you like the look of see if anyone on here who's local to it can give you a second opinion.
Wow, thanks for the warm welcome! @Lord Congi I'm looking for a tin top, not bothered about the interior (happy to add/adapt myself). I don't mind if it's LHD, but the boss says right only! As long as it's solid and runs, I don't mind! Looking at a couple of South African imports at the moment... I'm trying to be sensible and not get too excited, but it's difficult, we've been talking about this for years!
ahhh should have bought @zed bus but i am pretty certain it has sold now also how many kids do you have and do you plan on camping in it?
Shame @zed has just sold a wonderful tintop, with an awesome interior http://thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/68-tintop.54440/ LHD is not an issue really as I've driven both.
Get a righty unless your going abroad. Leftys are met with scorn and revile due to them having no British heritage at all and an easy "in". Whereas righty's are Brit vans even if colonial imports but best of all are the sort that have survived 40 odd years on British roads and lived to tell the tale. Translation - buy a recent import they are less rusty usually! SA or Aus for the win. Btw welcome and good luck.
@pkrboo just the one sproglet. We would get an awning for extra sleeping (or take our big tent for longer stays).
ok doke and the next question is what is your budget? this is the biggest thing that will decide on what you get and also how much work a bus will need, this also depends on the amoiunt of work you can/are prepared to do/ pay for
if you're Leicestershire way we're having a meet in lutterworth this weekend should you wish to nosey round a few vans.
Ah yes, I saw the event this weekend - I'm in Hinckley so it's literally just down the road! I think we'd feel a bit out of place, and nosey, turning up without a van though. As for budget, around £10,000 - but that would have to be without body or engine work needed (happy do do interior though). Am I asking for the moon on a stick? I've posted on the 'buying a van' section with a link to some I'm hoping to look at at this place: http://allclassics.co.uk asking for any opinions, before I fall in love with one (or my sproglet convinces me to buy one "coz it's red"!)
10k will get you a good van don't worry, especially if you're not bothered about a pop top ( although I would recommend it if you plan on camping etc
you'd be fine turning up without a van your choice i wouldn't have offered otherwise...... search for techenders thread if you want to pop in
