New rebuilt engine issue suspect cam timing

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Gooders, Apr 23, 2019.

  1. That’s running a lot smoother than mine at idle. I will try & get a video on tomorrow.

  2. did you synchronised the carbs?

Just had to have mine recovered from Scotland..got a faulty air cut off valve on standard carbs ( 2L ).
I noticed that when you revved the engine just enough to keep it running, the whole engine was swinging about from side to side...just thought I'd suggest something else to consider!

  5. The butterflies should only be open the width of a feeler gauge at idle. If they are really wide open, it does suggest a blocked idle circuit. did you use a snail meter to balance the carbs?

..unfortunatelly I did not manage to do much today..not due to bad weather but due to the fact I have ran out of fuel damn
..All I ve done I have reset the points (dwell at ~45) and rechecked the timing (set at 28/3000)..well to b honest everythings looks spot on to me..will see tomorrow what the day brings..I get some fuel and plug the vaccum gauge in and see..gonna take idle jets out again and make sure they not blocked (I no they tend to do so on drla’s)..and that’s pretty much all I can do about it..looks like I gonna have to live with it for now..

    On dells,
The left hand carb throttle stop should be backed off until there is no vacuum present when a vac gauge is fitted to the little VAC take off tube on the Left hand carb. Once there is no VAC showing on the gauge adjust the right hand carb throttle stop to match the left hand carb using a snail. Then don't touch the throttle stops again.

..I wish I had one of those rubbish single webber setups just to fit it to see if theres actually dual carb issue or somthing else

..thx mate but I only meant to have it to try out and see if it solved the rough idle..
..I might b that bad at setting duals I dont know as I dont have that much experience with them but both setups Ive tried and the same bad result

  14. I’ve been tinkering this morning without much success. Rain has stopped play. Managed to get a couple of vids though will upload them later.

  15. So first thing checked valve clearences, all ok.
Did a compression check all at 85-90psi which seems low but rings not bed in yet and only done a few miles. Or maybe because CR is not quite as high i I calculated with the dished pistons.
Replaced the carb needle jets as old ones a bit worn & didn’t trust them.
Started up no problem from cold & warmed it up a bit as no chokes on ict’s
Chugging on idle and bogging when I tried to pull away. Decided was running too rich and reverted back to 145 mains & 165 airs as they were before.
Been for a short run & power acceleration seems ok but still erratic on idle.
Takes a while for the revs to drop to idle when reved is this a sign of weak mixture?

  16. This is earlier today with the 165 mains in. Far too rich.

  17. Did you do the plug lead test.

    Ahhhhhggg

There’s a compatibility issue with ict and certain cams if I remember rightly , can’t remember the details but it rings a bell, idle like they are running on 3

that sounds ok, it won’t idle smoothly with a bigger lumpy cam, it also
    Won’t pick up
Smoothly from idle, what happens if you floor it above 1500-2000k rpm

  20. Do you have a large enough balance pipe between the 2 carbs
