New flywheel

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by the 3 crispies, Apr 1, 2020.

  1. How can I fit new flywheel on a new built 1600 type 1 engine without a measuring tool for end float. Engine builder put a 6v/180mm on by mistake and cant get back to him with lockdown. Anything homemade I can use just dont want to cause any engine damage.

  2. Order a dial gauge from eBay ;)

If you had to you could make a frame with a bolt sticking towards the flywheel and use feeler gauges.
Best though is to get a dial indicator - i bought an imperial calibrated European made one second hand for about a tenner on eBay.

Despite all the worries, its going too tight on the endfloat that kills with seizing.
Loose has to be millimetres before it does damage, at least in the short term.

Basically if when you push and pull on the crank and you hear it clunk but cant see it move you are in the ball park at about 0.1mm .. a bit less movement than a well adjusted tappet.

Main problem with engine rebuilds is that the other reason it goes clunk is the No1 bearing moving... which it shouldnt... if that happens then setting it "tight" means nothing for the bearing clearance and all bearing rattle. So it seizes and wrecks itself.

My own build ran for a long time with endfloat constant at 0.16mm.

And use the right number of shims.. too few and they tend to get damaged.
