New Carbs : twin solex or something new?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by jim mcglynn, Jun 25, 2017.

  1. I have rebuilt my original old solex Carbs for my 2 litre Type 4.

Now thinking though .... I'd actually rather put in something brand new if the general views are that alternatives Carbs are modern/reliable/better.

This is no doubt opening a can of worms in terms of opinions !

So, thoughts on new/alternative twin Carbs ? What's best? What's less fuss? Should I go for single rather than twin?

    Assume budget up to £1k.

Though the general view was that any new part for an old VW is modern/unreliable/not fit for purpose...I would have thought properly refurbished originals are the best way forward.

  3. Old solex pdsit's run beautifully when they are set up properly (there is a guide somewhere on here i think).
New solex's run nicely and dont need a guide to set them up (balance and tune)
    Single progressive is runs.

Any of the above are good if you have them set on a rolling road by sometone who knows thier onions.

The above is actually no help at all to anyone. ;)

I've always replaced old solex's with the new cb kit but thats because i like the easy life.
Although I have an idea that I want to build an FI setup for mine.

  5. Why change? You said you have rebuilt your original solex carbs so know about them now. I would stick with them. A lot of folks come on here with problems with their 'modern' alternatives. and new carbs are not cheap.

  6. As said above. Fitting a set of DRLA 36's will eat up your £1000 easily by the time you have rolling roaded them.

  7. Thanks all. Consensus looks like I save my money. Super. I was asking just in case people said "Carb xxxx is amazing and miles better blah blah blah".

Thanks all. I will throw the solex back on and find an expert/rolling road to fine tune them.

If you want new carbs twin Weber 40 IDFs work well on a 2.0l Jim, don’t fit a single progressive.
