Never buy a car you owned years ago

  1. Never buy a car you owned years ago. So many people have told me that. But when I bought my Bay - it was exactly as I remembered. It was a great experience. It even smelt the same. Then I bought a Jag XJS. Had one when I was 26, some 16 years ago. Again, it was a great experience, better than what I remembered. Now I'm thinking of buying a 1981 Escort XR3 (4-speed box) to make it a 3-car collection. Owed one 23 years ago. And I bet it will be exactly as I remembered, just as the others, just as good today as it was then.

So what about you folks? Ever bought a car you use to own and really let down by the experience or was it as good as you remembered?

  2. Na, I've always wanted better than the rubbish I used to own :)

I sold my series landy then bought it back a year later with only 1000 more miles on and i paid £800 less than i sold it for, sold it again a few months later and bought it back for the same money about a year after but the guy had abused it a bit......couldn't get over the way it didn't seem mine anymore so sold it for the last time to someone miles away this time so i'll never own it again........it is taxed though - i check on the dvla site periodically lol.
If i could afford to i'd love a Mk3 Cortina - that was my 1st car but good ones are very expensive now and cheap ones are sheds....

    I've progressed from a Citro

  5. I would like a nice Citroen Dyane, having owned 2 in the past. The best one was a lovely car and moved me and all my stuff to live in Germany, and back. Even got a postal MoT on it from my mate while away. I regret selling it, but didn't have the spare cash at the time.

I had a look again a couple of years ago, and was really disappointed in the quality of the cars avaiable. I don't want a shed, so gave up on the idea.

    Beetle next anyway - probably.

  6. I bought back a car that I owned before , not the same IMO .

It's like taking back your ex girlfriend after she's been round the block and violated by other men ......not for me

  10. Um,... not really. But I sold one to a lady who had one just like mine. You may appreciate the story.
It was a very rare special edition 1979 black and gold Smokey & the Bandit Trans Am in gorgeous condition.
She was driving by and saw it with the For Sale sign in the window.
I don't know where she was headed at the time, but when she saw that car she made an immediate priority adjustment.
She said she had traded her identical Trans Am for a Corvette and regretted it from day one. For years she longed to have her old Pontiac back, but she was sure she would never see another like it.
And this is not far fetched. I often look at them in Ebay. I see a lot that claim to be the top of the line S.E., but they never are. I can tell the difference at a glance. I'm sure she can too.
I was at work and she came dashing
in, wide-eyed and nearly frantic. As soon as she found me, she caught her breath and asked, "Is that the 4 spd manual with the 400ci engine and WS6 suspension?!". I said, "Why yes it is.".
Then, without so much as having sat in it or looking under the hood, she whips out her wallet, desperately looking for a suitable down payment so I would hold the car until the banks opened the next day. I think she even offered me her watch. I probably could have gotten her first born had I pressed the matter.
I just laughed and tried to calm her. I told her not to worry and promised to hold it for her. She was very reluctant to leave. I thought for a moment she might try to spend the night parked next to it.
Of course she was back the next day, about 11 minutes after her bank opened. She was positively giddy. It was nice to see my car was going to be appreciated.
She may sound a bit off her nut to the casual observer, but anybody who has ever driven one of those cars would fully understand.
I mentioned to a friend that driving it almost felt,...sexual, in a way. He laughed at me. Until he drove it one day. He was quite surprised to find himself reluctantly agreeing.
Anyway, I ran into her in a mall about 6 months later and I asked how she was enjoying the car.
She looked at me flatly and said, "When I drove it home from your house, the timing chain broke as I was pulling in my driveway.".
I felt my face turn nearly purple from embarrassment. I knew it meant she had to rebuild the engine.
She lightened up when she saw my reaction. She said not to worry, one never knows when a timing chain is about to go.
But other than that, she got her car back and eventually loved it.
Wow. I really didn't mean to write such a long response. I believe I've had a bit too much tea.
