think I’ve asked about this before but here goes its 1800 type 4 imported from usa ,was stood for a number of years but not seized and was compression tested in the states with even figures on all four ,its running a twin choke webber carb ,valve clearances have not been checked , it drives very well with ample power and acceleration the symptoms it uses a fair bit of oil ,it smokes on start up but then calms down ,it smokes when you turn right & the oil surges to the left(but there was slightly to much oil init at the time ) ,as mork puts it “its an oily smell as it stings eyes when we follow you”, there seems to be oil under the tinware around no4? cylinder (back left looking in though hatch),also on no4 ? the the tube from the air recirclation /anti smog usa exhaust thingey is not as tight as it should be as the threads are a bit ropey think that s covers it all any ideas what might be the cause
using oil and smoking on start up is usually valve stem seals innit? had a landy that did the same - was a right cloud in a morning and stunk the street out.
it is smoking when you boot it though - if it can be smelt behind...... it just doesn't show up as much when the engines warm.
Likely as not Ricky isn't too far off the money Most likely cause will be worn valve stems and guides... (these old motors don't have stem seals, well not proper ones) I've got a pair of heads to do at the moment for an engine rebuild, and it's like a stick in a bucket
I'd describe the smoking on a right turn as if an anti surge baffle was missing - it doesnt smoke on a left turn (believe me I still have oil in me eyes now )
oil pressure switch? either loose or they somtimes leak through the middle. Can't think cornering would make a difference though, maybe a left hand turn forces oil that's already leaked out from that side of the engine onto the heat exchanger or the silencer? Smoke on startup might be different problem. Ah smoke is all from the exhaust? I probably mis-read the OP. ;D
Valve stem seals if it clears after a while running Ford cvh engines were notorious for this so much so a tool got released to change the seals without pulling the heads
Coming out of the tailpipe is either piston rings or valve guides Valve guides will cause smoke on start up that clears once the engine has properly warmed up Smoke under load like accelerating uphill is worn rings
i ve sort of written the the smoke on cornering down to slightly to much oil in as i didn’t think it was as bad on the return trip was it mark ? after th xs has been burnt off if its worn valve stems and guides would it be viable to get a local machine shop/general engine building place loose on the heads ? and how much is it likely to cost ? ish
