  1. cheers mark, ive got some rubbers on the way from lhu1281. but i think my overriders are going to be a little too small, both height and width. so may have to start again, luckily i hadnt started on the rears yet.

Excellent work and progress, keep posting, looks like your flying along with it .

  3. I was planning on cracking on with the body repairs today, but the clamps, discs and other bits and bobs ive ordered haven't turned up yet. So I thought id crack on with re-making the bumper over riders. I started trying to make original style ones, but just could not get the profile on the rounded corners right, so I made them more square, like the first ones. at least they are a bit different to everyone else's.

I started with a template, provided by lhu1281, as you can see mine on the left.. were too small.

i cut out the template and drew around it onto metal, then cut out. did this twice obviously then again for the other two sides.

    one all welded up..

    then cleaned up and painted
    [IMG]

i killed my last flapdisc so i will get some more and finish the other one tomorrow hopefully.

I also have got some new bits..

  4. Today's update...

I've finished off my front over riders!!! I just need to sort out a method of attaching them.
they've been zinc primed, and had rubbers fitted, need a little body filler then paint.

I'm really pleased with how they came out. Not the radius edged style like originals, but still look O.K.

  6. Those overrides look awesome.

  7. I didn't get as much done today as I would have liked, as i ran out of welding gas and had to go on a hunt.

but first off I got the inner rear valance all finished and painted. its black but the crap photo doesn't show it very well..

also got some of the inside of the engine bay lower part cleaned off and sprayed
    [IMG]

The previous owner had welded a plate inside the engine bay, and not bothered to clean up the welds.. so i did it. doesnt look too bad.

I might just cut it out and start again though, not sure yet.

As some of you may know, I got a mobile welder to come and put a rear corner on when I first started the resto, and it was really crap. So I cut it off today and started a fresh. luckily I managed to score some lower light bits that I welded on so it had the original return for the lights.

the return section is also on, and ive got the corner cut and ready to go in tomorrow hopefully.

  8. Then I ran out of gas.. I had been using the £15-a-pop disposable bottles, but managed to find an alternative today..

  9. What gas you got , I use a argon mix and the welds are so much nicer and cleaner .looks good mate keep up the good work

  10. yeah its an argon mix, the same mix thats in the disposable bottles.

the disposables are £15 a pop, this was £50 bottle rentage, £30 fill up, £60 regulator and pipes etc. but it has the capacity of 25 bottles. and refills are £30.
works out sooo much cheaper in the long run.

  11. I cracked on with the rear NS corner today.. I can see what people mean about them needing perseverance and fettling to fit.
before I put it on I removed the paint from the inside and zinc primed it. then drilled holes to plug weld around the battery tray.

you might be able to see the edge of the repairs that i did to the battery tray..

    then i started welding.

    not finished yet.

There was a section of the engine bay surround that had previosly been bodged, but it had rotted through again as the underlying rust hadnt been removed.
i forgot to take a before pic... but i cut it out and made a section to go back in. I'll also zinc primer it to hold back the rust in the future.

  16. Cheers for all the comments guys! Ill keep coming with the pics.

And para... A late 50's early 60's beetle is on my wish list for the next project.
    :)
For someone who 8 months ago had literally no clue on vw's or car restoration.. I threw myself in at the deep end a little bit and im really happy with where im at now.
And if the sun would stay out a little longer and the neibours would winge a little less id be out there right now. :D

  17. Argon mix is by far the best way to go the bottles are better priced than they use to be I get mine from boc but have had company Accounts there for years

  18. todays update!

I started up on the rear corner again this morning, got it all welded up and dressed the welds, theres a little bit i cant reach at the moment, i need belts for the file sander.
    then zinc primed it.

I then got the repair section that I made yesterday welded in and cleaned up.

this is when i noticed a bolt poking out the bottom, must have sheared off when i took the rear bumper off, so i decided to weld in all new captive nuts, just for easy of fitting and removal. ill do the other side next week.

Ive also made some of the D-post repair bits ready for welding in, i didnt take pics of these though.
and before i packed up for the day i decided to make a template for the cab floor repair, I picked up a good trick by watching wheeler dealers the other day.

Using a clean sheet of A4.. i layed the paper on top of the hole and rubbed my dirty finger along the edges, gave a perfect template. I then copied this onto the sheet metal ready to be cut out.

Lastly I removed all the transport primer from my new battery tray and then primed it.

starting to look like a bus again!

  20. I didn't really get much done this weekend. I drove to derby to pick up some panels from dubscum, so that took up all of saturday.
then sunday I went out all day.

I had the day off today so I ventured out to do a little.
started off by driving down the road to a local sheet metal supplier, and picked up some big sheets of 1.2mm steel.

then I finished off welding in all the captive nuts for the rear bumper irons/towbar. Then test fitted it. then put the rear bumper on, just because im going to be making the rear bumper over riders soon.
lovely and clean with new bolts..

the mudflap brackets looked a bit.... shiny.

this is the first thing I repaired on my van, because if i buggered it up i could replace it cheap enough.. the welds are pretty lumpy, but i covered it in weldseal, then stonechipped it. good for years to come..

and to cap off an uneventful day.. I used welding magnets to hold the MK2 overriders in place to get an idea what they will look like.

    and thats it this weekend.
I was inside and in the shower by 2pm. haha.
