  1. Good work Carl.

  2. First Update in aaaagggeess!!
its been abit too cold for me to do anything on the bus lately. (im skinny.. and a wuss)

but the sun came out for a few hours so I thought id do something this weekend.

I started out with the inside of the NS wheelarch. I had previously cut out all of the rot, so it was just new metal to go in.

this is the previous owners attempt. weld a plate with a hole in on top of the old rust.

cut out and replaced.. still needs welds dressing.

this is the hole i had to fill..

and filled.. sorry, i forgot to take pics whilst doing it..

also gave the arch inner a good cleaning up
    [IMG]

this is my attempt at an A post repair.. i didnt have anything to go off so i just guessed really. still needs a litle work.

also managed to get the tank sprayed. I went for matt black in the end. came out really nice. like the bat mobile.

also the engine tinware is mostly back on

ive also cleaned up and primed the outer sill but its about 5mm short overall so theres big gaps at the end.. anyone got any suggestions?
i thought about welding a plate on each end to bulk it out a little, but the shapes awkward so may be tricky.

  3. That tank and engines looking mighty fine dude

  4. I had the day off work today so decided to try and make some bumper over riders, I really like originals, but dont like the price tag.
I had a sheet of metal from JK (£15)
I got started by cutting some templates out of a cereal box. bit hit and miss really. I just guessed the sizes.

I then drew round them onto some sheet metal..

cut them out, and put back on the metal and sprayed, to make templates for the other side.

I decided to make them 3" wide, so i measured out the steel, clamped a bar onto the metal and used it as a guide to run the angle grinder along. i cut out 4 of these strips..

once all the bits are cleaned up and ready, I used some welding magnets to get the side parts squarely on the front, then tacked.
doing the other side was a bit more tricky as I needed to get it square, and the same level. after a little head scratching I used a square to mark the top of the side I had already tacked on, then lined the other side up to that line. simple but it took me a good 5 mins to figure it out haha.

after all this is done its just a case of going round the over rider, tacking the front onto the sides wherever possible, then bending the front around the top and bottom parts, tacking, bending and so on.
then when all is tacked it can be welded on the edges. some parts may need grinding smooth like the little tab on the bottom of this over rider...
then its just a case of smoothing over the edges.

  5. and heres the end result..
not exactly original looking, but they'll do. ill body filler them and paint them, and if they look crap ill bin them.

the overriders look good from the pics - no need to bin them, fine fill any suspect areas, coat of paint & they'll look bang tidy

  7. nice work Carl.

  8. They look good to me dude:thumbsup:

  9. little bit more...
I really want a devon roof cap.. but at £400.. no chance. then theres the skylight funnel, uprated springs etc. all adds up.

so I knew there was a scrap yard 10 miles from me which has 1 camper.. so I went to have a look as you never know.

    and BAM
    [IMG]

£80! and it comes with the skylight funnel, springs, lifting mechanisms, original roof underneath and the plastic trim that hides the pop top frame.
    RESULT!

I laid it down and cleaned it up and it looks great, maybe a few touch up here and there but otherwise perfect.

Pleased for you Carl. Nice to get a bargain.

  12. What an interesting thread. Well done Carl :)

  13. Awesome what a bargain:thumbsup:

  14. today's update..

I started by doing a repair on the inner wheel arch tub, the bit that the cab floor sits on, mine had rusted out..

also repaired the B-Post bit where the wheel arch goes.. no before picture.. still needs a little dressing too
    [IMG]

I had to repair the outer sliding door sill, it was about 1cm too short so i welded some ends on to bring it out, then painted the inside to protect, then welded on.

then the sliding door track, had some holes in so i cut out the rot and replaced with solid metal.

still have one to do at the end..

  15. Its progressing well dude

  16. Nice bargain. Was there anything else of interest on the camper in the scrapyard? (assuming it was a bay?)

  17. yeah its got a few bits left, the doors are left, RHD sliding door, seats, seat bulkheads, gearbox.

I spent today stripping and repairing the pop top, ive repaired the previous bodged repairs, and got it ready for paint. no pics sorry.

I also cleaned up my welds on the front seat belt mount..

then put the front bumper on to see what my DIY overriders would look like..

Oh and the roof cap i got... I thought it would be covered in glue and be impossible to remove without damage, but it came off fairly easy, no damage and there was hardly any glue at all.

Good news on the roof cap - everyone doing a resto deserves the odd thing to go better than expected!
