Although i have done some discreet non structual welding with a mig , recently i began a welding project of my own , its very simple and i have been using a arc welder but none the less its a start--

i had these two brackets at the back of the volvo for a tow bar -

it takes a swan neck which i cannot source , so , two bits of 5 mm box

    cleaned up edges

    And away i went-

This is the way it will sit -- held in place with two bolts -

How i got the correct angle for face plate -

i know its not very good , but has so many on here have told me to get welding , its a start ! ::)

    More power ??.

  2. Poptop, have you tried a scrappy for the neck? Also if it's a Brink (now Thule Towing) and you can get the number off the bar I can ring them from work and see if they have one. Work for Indespension.

Not asthetic welding but i had a go --

    And it works

Will have it looked at for strength on sunday before it gets used in anger !!

  16. Ok ... MIG is the strongest type of welding as the force of the fed wire creates deeper penatration .
if you get my meaning 8) i`d buy a propper tuv tested one

Its only a project to try out my stick welding , i am sure its got the strength but i will have it checked on sunday by my mate who has a engineering firm ,he says if its not right he will sort it on sunday morning -- i would buy a proper one if i could find the make , volvo have no idea who made it ,its not a witter or any of the usual suspects , someone has suggested its a swedish maker but i can't find any reference to one

tbh its never going to do any serious work just the odd tip run !.

looks good buddy. i think as long as you're only going to cart small loads it'll be fine. dont think i'd trust it with a tonne of sand or a caravan though

  20. To be fair poptop, type approval didn't come in until 1998, so S-reg cars onwards need approved bars. Anything before that you can make your own bar. Still best to get it checked though.
