My 1970 bug

  1. Made a start on my Kamei style rear parcel shelf. Made from 1/2" ply vs the 3mm hardboard Kamei ones are made of so it shouldn't sag. I also made the sides a little bit wider so i can mount my speakers on them. The opening is still 24" wide so enough space to fit a bag through without having to fold the seat forwards.

  2. Iv seen some of the under dash shelves made out of bamboo and wicker. Looks good.

  3. I was tempted to do that but they'd look more period on a 60's bug.
I really want one of these Kamei ones but they make good money now. Theres a cracked one on ebay for £26.

I might just make something like this and cover it in black vinyl as i have loads of leftover ply. vw-bug-parcel-tray-ghe-1958.jpg

  4. These shelves seem like a useful addition, but what would they do to your legs in the event of an accident?

  5. Its the steering column and windscreen hitting you in the face thats more of a worry to me.

  6. Got some padding stuck down and the vinyl stappled into place. Just the rear edge under the window to sort out as it wraps round the support and acts as a hinge for the lid. Not sure whether to make a support to hold it up when its open. Something like an overcentre support.

Bought some chrome button screw caps to break up the plain vinyl. Something like this:

Liking this idea! May do something similar for the Baja.

  8. It looks like a magnet in the knob migh meet with the rear window frame and hold it open?

  9. It misses the top window frame by about 2". :(

Gonna make a lip round the edge to stop stuff falling off and cover it in grained black vinyl i think.

  15. Checked the fit. Needed a notch cutting for the steering column and will need another small one in the middle where the bottom of the dash is formed around the airbox drain.

The speakers i ordered aren't coming anymore so i've had to order from elsewhere but they aren't gonna arrive for another week and a half. They're only coming from Manchester too according to ebay. I think that might be a lie unless they're coming on a pack horse.

  18. Probably drop shipped from China.

  19. Yeah, they're being shipped from Manchester but obviously stocked from Hong Kong or somewhere.

  20. All ready to be sanded then covered in some faux leather grain black vinyl.
