My 1970 bug

  1. Few little bits checked off the list. It was too wet this afternoon to weld up the outrigger on my bay.

Got the terminals fitted to the earths for the horns, indicators, headlights and spotlights. Repaired the indicator base that was missing the bolts as i can't find the other 2 i know i have somewhere.
Still missing a mirror i bought at Tatton a few years back and the seatbelt are AWOL too. :(

A mate has another one of these headlight bulb fixing things going spare to replace the broken one i have. Just need to wait until mid april when i see him next to pick it up.

  2. Got the headlights and indicators bolted on today. Nice to give the car its face back. :D

  3. Cleaned up an old set of spotlights.

And bolted them to the bumper mounts.

    Still need a front bumper.

  4. Stuck the old rusty front bumper back on as i've lost count of the amount of times my shin has made contact with the end of the bumper mount.
2019-03-30 16.13.00.jpg Looks like the spotlight mounting brackets can be moved forwards a little bit.

Found the chrome trim i thought i'd lost so stuck a bit on. Could probably have done with a polish first.

Remember kids, Belt up in the back. :p

  5. Trial fit of the kamei spoiler.

Front bumper needs sliding back slightly from the look of it.

    Old wynn's sticker I found.

  6. Slid the bumper mounts back 3/4" on their slots which brings the kamei spoiler to within 1/2" of the lower wing edge leaving just enough space for a thick rubber washer.

  7. Adjusted the tracking as best i could. In the manual i have it says 0.5 degrees +- 0.25 degrees. I've got it measured as 5.5mm toe in at the tyre which equates to about 0.5 degrees using GCSE trigonometry. :p

Bolted the tank into place for the last time after connecting the fuel line up underneath.

Along with new filler and breather hoses.

Wired the washer pump up with an inline valve. Screwed all the earths to 2 new self tappers and connected the cable for the bonnet realease too.

  9. Been trying to set the steering stops. One side of the pitman arm misses the stop slightly so its possible for the tyre to hit the inner wing.
The box is in the right place on the beam so it looks like i welded the stop bracket on in slightly the wrong position.

These are the buggers (not my piccy). The left hand bolt in this piccy hits the pitman arm correctly but the other one is slightly too low. I'm hoping a few whacks with a BFH upwards like this will distort it enough so they both touch.

  10. Take the bolt out
Weld a big washer flat to the top to make it bigger and put it back. Bodged.

Would the angle the steering box is bolted to the tube make a difference?

  12. Nice job on the schooshy pump!

  13. The steering box is at the right angle as the clamp only lets it sit in one position as theres pips welded to the beam to align it. Column has a straight shot into the box too.
I welded a 17mm nut on the top of the stop bolt but it still only contacts by about 2 or 3mm so if you crank the steering to full lock the pitman arm can still push past and lock the steering up.
If the bracket doesn't move with some whacks a 30mm penny washer will be welded to the bolt head.

    Cheers.

  14. Welded a washer to the head of the nut as the bracket is on good and proper.

  15. Made a start reassembling the rear end. Bumper brackets are slightly high so the 3 bolts per side don't fit. Gonna slacken the rear wing bolts to allow some movement as they're slightly high at the rear.

  16. Gave up trying to find a section of chrome trim for the speaker grill at a reasonable price (£30+ for a 6" bit isn't a reasonable price in my books) so chopped the ends off a piece of damaged 1/4 panel trim instead.

  17. Got the headlights fitted with their bulbs, bolted on the rear bumper mounting brackets once i'd removed them from the bumper and modified the brackets that came with the mudflaps i bought at Tatton in 1999.
Thought the speedo cable was gonna win yesterday as try as i might it just wouldn't go through the grommet and spindle. Turns out the grommet was clogged with probably dry paint so i ripped it out and used a length of fuel hose instead. Can't for the life of me find my grease gun so can't fit the dust cover to the hub.

    Still collecting period tat. :D

I really want a black GB plate with silver letters like this but they are silly money. :(

  20. Added a P clip to the inner arch to replace the missing clip that holds the speedo cable in place.

Realised the speedo cable is the wrong side of the track rod so gonna have to remove the cable and put it back on the right side.
