My 1970 bug

  1. Gave the inlet manifold a coat of high temperature paint.

Fitted a new oil strainer and sump gaskets and bolted on the sump plate. For some reason 5 studs are M6 and one is an obscure imperial course thread.

  2. Gave the engine a bit more of a cleanup and threw some paint at it.

Heads will need a cleanup, valves set and rocker covers painting.

Gave the tinware a couple of coats of satin black.

A couple of bits reacted on this bit so i'll sand it back and clean it properly before shooting on some more paint.

Even working outside i end up with dog hairs stuck in the paint.

Can't seem to lay my hands on the bit under the thermostat as it was removed about a decade earlier than the rest of the tinware. I know i have at least 3 of them somewhere. The little bits between the block and heat exchangers and the hot air feed are somewhere too.

Pulley needs another clean as i think it was still a bit greasy. Not sure why i never cleaned it with panel wipe like the tinware.

  3. Cleaned up some more of the tinware and painted it satin black.

Still haven't managed to find the bit of tinware for under the thermostat (or the thermostat for that matter), but i did find a narrower bit from a 1200 engine. I've never owned a 1200 so not sure where thats from.

Painted the rocker covers in silver high temp paint. Think i prefer them black though.

Found this tool pouch i'd saved from our old Nissan Bluebird when it went to the big car park in the sky.

Fould the wheel brace off our passat which met a similar fate fits the wheel bolts on my EMPI 8s nicely. Its got a double ended screwdriver in the end too. Found a couple of 10/13mm vw stamped spanners and an old pair of pliers marked the same. No idea where they came from.

  4. Got the engine into the garage and made a start putting the tinware back on.
    2018-08-25 15.12.08.jpg

Inlet manifold was a pain to get the nuts tightened up as you can't get a socket on two of them and theres not a lot of space for a spanner either.

Managed to drop the fanhousing. :(
    2018-08-25 16.17.54.jpg
Bent it just a slight bit.
    2018-08-25 16.17.48.jpg

I've hammered it back into sort of the right shape. At least it now fits the fan shrouds again.
I managed to bend the generator's backing plate too. :(

  5. Managed to get it to fit like this now.

Outlet still needs a bit more work to get it completely round but the pipe fits anyway.

  6. Bit more added on. Still can't find some bits for it though. I know I painted some more bits of tinware and the accelerator tube but no idea where I put them. Can't find the shims or nut for the top pulley either and I know I have atleast 2 or 3 of them.

Fran's off on a spa day with her mum so on my lonesome today. Can't think of much to do in the garage though.

  7. Possibly the reason I can't find anything.

  8. pump the tyre up Martin - then have a tidy up to find your "lost" bits

  9. Both my 12v compressors have died within hours of each other. One blew its pipe apart as it was perished and the other just screams when switched on. :(
Not sure that tyre will hold air anymore anyway. Some new tyres are needed when i get some cash together.

Decided to have a play on Forza 7 on the xbox instead but after i'd waited 1 1/2 hours for xbox and forza to update themselves i only had a 20 minute play before Fran came home.

  10. Had a tidy up of the garage today. Threw a load of stuff it the camper to create some more working room and went through all the boxes of stuff looking for the missing bits.
Still can't find the thermostat, the tinware for under it and the tube the accelerator cable runs through in the firewall.
    2018-08-30 16.21.46.jpg

  11. Well i've searched everywhere and still can't find the thermostat, the bit of tin underneath it or the tube the accelerator cable runs through. Yet more things to add to the 'to buy' list.

  12. I got the hard fuel line bent to shape so it fits round the fan housing, but i can't connect it to the fuel pump as i don't have any fuel hose at the moment.
Rebuilt the dizzy, re-soldered the earth strap to the points plate and replaced the broken fibre washers with some donated by a knackered dizzy.
Found the 3 missing springs for connecting the thermostat bar on the back of the fan housing to the fan housing flaps too. :)

  13. How can £14 for a 1/2m of 47mm ID paper hose be allowed? That's daylight robbery.
I need two lengths of it too.

  14. Because it has vw in the add

  15. what is it sorry i don t know

  16. 47mm internal diameter paper hose. The stuff from fan Shroud to heater boxes

  17. ok i always got mine from heritage , i think euro does 50mm , or any ventilation company will do it

  18. Its the stuff up the A pillar from the heater channel to the Y piece just under the bonnet hinge but same stuff.
    https://www.vwheritage.com/113255463a-heater-channel-to-junction-fresh-air-hose-vw-spare
The 50mm stuff is only £4.09 from JK for 1m but not sure how to reduce it down in size apart from cutting it and wrapping some tape around it. The Y piece is 47mm and the heater channel outlet is 42 i think on the repro channels.

  19. Set the end float, fitted a new viton oil seal and bolted on the flywheel.
Thought better of spending £30 on a couple of tools i might use a few times so made my own from scrap. ;)

I love the look of an aircooled engine.
    2018-09-14 16.16.53.jpg

Fuel line. Its not as cork screwy as it looks.
    2018-09-14 15.50.24.jpg

Put some air into the tyres and they all held air after years of sitting flat.

  20. Found my feeler guages a few days after my new ones arrived.
They were right infront of my face on the magnetic tool holder on my workbench. I'd removed everything off that before when i was looking and they definately weren't there. At least the new ones are in mm and thous.
