My 1970 bug

  1. Made a start removing the lacquer off the rims. The flakey bits come off easily but the other bits are well stuck. :(

Not removed the tyre off this rim yet but its knackered so will have to be replaced.

Getting a replacement rim off a bloke on vzi to replace the 4th which is badly curbed.

  2. Few bits of tinware removed off the engine for cleaning and a few coats of bonda primer followed by sating black.

  3. Gave the rear shocks and steering damper a coat of racing red gloss. Gotta add at least 5BHP. :D

Sanded the fanhousing and the cylinder shrouds but one needs a new captive nut installing as its fallen out somewhere. I think i remember seeing one kicking about somewhere in the garage a while ago but if i can't find it i'll need to weld one in.
Back to my garage tomorrow so hopefully i'll get the rear hub seal i fitted 90 degrees out put back the right way and some brake springs and shoes fitted to the hubs.

  5. Gave some bits a coat of bonda primer this morning. Had a couple of small reaction on the front of the fanhousing but it should look OK once its sanded and has some satin black over the top.

Looks a bit orange under fluorescent lights.

Forgot to bring my celly thinners over so don't have anything to clean the brush with. It was only a few weeks old too and was still soft. :(

Engine bay side of the front and rear tinware painted.

  6. Got another EMPI 8 arriving in the post tomorrow (on a sunday ) to replace the badly curbed one.
Still not managed to remove the rest of the lacquer off the polished rims. The new Nitromors is pants. You might as well spit on the item and hope it does the job.

  7. Found the missing captive nut so popped the little bugger back in its home.

Ran the grinder with a wire wheel over the shroud and knocked a couple of dents out of it.

Coil bracket got a clean up and some silver paint.
I also cleaned the surface rust off the generator and gave it a coat of silver too.

    Cleaned the carb.
Still in two minds about whether to stick the nikki carb i have on the engine though i think it might need a rebuild though and the seals are probably now obsolete.

  8. Gave the fanhousing a coat of satin black. Not perfect as theres a couple of reactions again but the coil covers one and one of the stickers will cover the other.

Did the front and rear tin too.

Put a coat of bonda primer on the cylinder shrouds.
Didn't bother welding up the 3 small holes in the LHS tin as it wasn't worth the effort to dig my welder out and zip them up.

  9. Shrouds got a coat of satin black today.

Got another EMPI 8 to replace the curbed one.

Its slightly different from the other 3 but it'll do for the time being and it was made in the UK by KN.

Tried some paint stripper on the lacquer and after a couple of coats and 2 hours waiting its turned it white and slightly sticky.

  10. Gave the inlet manifold a clean up with the grinder and a wire brush.

The engine case might need a bit more work though.

  11. Generator looks a little tidier now.

    Starter bolted to the gearbox.

  12. Bolted the heater pipes to the shell as you can't fit them once its on the chassis.

Cleaned up the geanny stand a little and tidied it up with some black paint.

Genny and coil bolted back onto the fanhousing with a new tappet adjustment sticker added.

Tyre pressure sticker on the glovebox lid.

Removed the back drum and backplate again so i could bolt it on the right way around (i.e not 90 degrees out) but managed to trash the paper gaskets as they had a thin smear of hylomar on them. :(

  13. Is it cold over your way zeb?
We’ve not got above 4 deg today and apparently it’s going to drop colder over the weekend

  14. Not got over about 3 or 4c yesterday and its only 2 at the moment.
    No snow though. :(

  15. Same sort of temps as us then
We’ve had a tickle of snow but the east coast seems to be getting a fair bit of it.

  16. Too cold to be working in an unheated concrete garage.

Gave the anti roll bar a coat of red paint just because i could. :D
Cut myself a couple of new rear hub oil seal gaskets as i sure as hell ain't gonna pay £3.20 for 2 of them.

  17. Started putting the rear brakes back together and snapped off the end of the brake adjuster spring bar thingy (technical name ;))

    Should look like this:
Its peened into place so i knocked the remains out with a screwdriver and hammer and made another as i wasn't willing to pay £5.50 for one ;).
I'll see if its possible to peen the new one into place but if i can't then i'll drill a hole in the metal block, tap it and use a small screw and some locktite.

I fitted the handbrake cable while i was sat on the freezing floor. Cable goes in here:
Back plate looks a little tatty but some of its just stonechip paint and muck. :D

    Through here:

    and out of here:

No idea what this is for but i assume its useful as i didn't bin it.

  18. Its always worrying finding that bit left over, I replaced the main bearings on a Honda cx500 many years ago only to find I had one 5mm ball bearing left. After several days rechecking things I realized it had come from the wheel of one of the trolleys I had used

  19. A cruel trick...:D

  20. I remember putting an engine together and finding one half of a crankshaft bearing leftover. So glad i didn't try and fire it up before i found it.

I found out where that clip goes. It sits above the connecting bar and holds the top spring out of the way of the wheel cylinder. :)
    Piccy i found on google.
