MOT getting tougher

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by orangeena, Aug 23, 2011.

  1. Hello All,

Just dropped the van off at my local aircooled garage (Fox & Sons) for a (belated) MOT and service.
Danny mentioned that from next year the MOT is going to get a lot tougher to pass in lots of ways
For instance there will be no leeway for damaged gaiters and other rubber boots.

Has anyone got any more information on this?

    Cheers
    Max

I'm all for rougher regulations. We've seen some real horror stories that have MOT's.

  3. I agree, with a vehicle of this age, combined with the fact that it is carrying my most precious cargo (my kids) I am happy that they are going to firm up on some things.

  6. Just be thankful we dont have TUV tests or most of the vans would have been scrapped by now!

Probably of most concern to late bay owners - wiring condition.

  9. Interesting that there appear to be 50 extra things to be taken into account, but the DOT are 'working with testers to keep this cost neutral'. How are they going to do that then? Do more work, charge the same money. That does not seem entirely fair.

Nor would it seem "fair" if the cost suddenly doubled.

Bi yearly is I agree a total disaster waiting to happen. My GTi needed work last year. I've not done 3000 miles this year and it needed more work.

  12. Apparently in Japan they have an MOT test every 4 years but it costs £1000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. there have been various scare stories going around for months now and that ACE article is just one of many. according to the VOSA publication there will be new guide lines for vintage vehicles and will be along the lines of if it came out of the factory like it, it will do. its more to do with old snotters that never had proper brakes or any kind of windscreen wipers etc etc.

the main changes will affect modern cars more. Airbag and SRS lights will now be testable and so will EML's.

VOSA will still be enouraging testers to pass and advise where ever possible. lets just wait and see what comes of it all
