Might have to swap fuel injection system for carbs - help me save or choose?

  1. Hi guys - I've had a rebuild at the Beetle Barn in St Ives, Cambs, all good apart from the fact that the injectors seem to have given up the ghost. I've got a 2.0 type 4 with the original jetronic injection (77 blue hightop bay from Arizona), with porsche heads/valves. The injection system just doesn't want to work any more. The guys at Beetle Barn have checked the relays they could get to and fuel delivery seems ok (checked on Fish's advice) and changed the air pipes, got new rubber connectors and changed some wires that looked bust. Their advice is to switch to carbs as the injector may just be buggered?
    1) As regards fixing the system (my preferred choice) - any idea if these units just...die (I heard they were bombproof?)? Any other mega injector experts in St. Ives area you know of that may be able to help?
    2) Can you get new injection systems (idea of cost?)?
    3) What would be the best carb system to go for if I were to do this - my main aim is just a solid performer with the best possible economy (looking to LPG) convert. Speed not a major concern, but don't want a driveway ornament - this bus will be driven! Again, idea of costs for systems appreciated.
    4) Feel free to have any rants on your opinions of the relative merits of one system over another!

    Cheers in advance,
    Moi.

  2. P.S. I didn't type [glow=red,2,300]FACT[/glow] in those weird letters/capitals - it did that itself :D
P.P.S. Apologies for what looks like a duplicate thread earlier last year - I just felt that my situation had altered sufficiently for this one - mods, if you feel the need to merge threads, feel free and sorry!!

  3. I'd stick with the original injection system. Try and find someone who knows the old Bosch stuff. It's not that complicated.

prob know, but ratwell.com has a lot of info on this kind of stuff.

  4. Thanks Snotty, if anyone has any recommendations that would be sweet? Tristan's had a guy who knows injectors have a look and he couldn't sort it, but I dunno about his personal experience with the Bosch system...

  5.
  6. Get it checked by someone who really knows the injection system

is it still running for 10 mins then dying?

  8. @ all - ta for all the responses!!
@ Snotty/Happyharry - You know anyone in the Cambs/Beds area that could pop down and have a gander - I'd obv pay for their time! As regards the airmeter, I think he said that was fine?
@ Fish - I'm not sure what the latest in terms of running time is tbh, but I know that overall it's a negative on working properly. I queried the relays and he said the ones they could check seem ok (I don't know why some can't be checked), but apparently they were spraying fuel well?
@ pkrboo - thanks for the offer on the manual, but in my stage of engine knowledge (increasing, but slowly, especially as I've not got the van to hand!) it would be wasted on me! You're not located handy are ya? :D

vinnyboy on here has a spare injection system, he converted to carbs on his champagne 2 litre.

  10. That could be very handy! Merci!

Superscally does it go but just not very well? If so there is an excellent mechanic in Ramsey that we've used for our bus. You'd need to be able to get it to him but he is fair and know his stuff.

  12. you can get the injectors checked and cleaned, I just rebuilt a 2l with efi, and sent the injectors off, came back cleaned, new internal filters, and the short bits of fuel hose replaced, all for around the £70 mark

The main issue with the injection system is air leaks... any kind of leak on the intake system will throw it off, and it will run like poo

  13. @ Sandybay - not far at all, one problem is that it just ain't running at the mo. Always a chance T could take it there on his low loader
@ Joker/Paul - could be the way forward. As regards air leaks, we've changed the hoses, so lets just say we sent it off and they said it worked fine, I guess that implies poss leaks/problems in areas that we haven't sent off. The question then is exactly how much of the system do we send? How much to post a van? Could the wiring loom be buggered? I also guess there is a possibility they could say: "Broken/No fixy this mister" :D

they have a very basic ecu is there a chance this could be at fault?

  15. That was it, Paul pointed me to them guys, a good place to start with the basics. Injectortune - you take the injectors off with the little stubby pipes, put them in the post, they clean them, put new seals in them and new stubby short pipes. Fit them, tick a box, test it, if no worky try the next one. Fuel pump working fine? Fuel filter in place?
    :)

  16. @Rickyrooo 1: I think that's their concern - it was mentioned.
@ Joker: I assume so, he said that they seemed to be spraying fuel ok and I also assume he'd have put a filter in? I know assumption is the mutha of all fick-ups, but without having the van and a Tristan to hand, my answer to the questions are a bit limited. I can certainly put all of these to him when I speak next...

So...can we send this (ECU) to injectortune?

the reason i mentioned the ecu is that is very similar to what caused vinnyboy to go to carbs, the ecu was found at fault but the rest of the system is good, he offered it me as a spare.

  18. If ECU was buggered - possible to get a new one, or...carbsville? They do LOOK cool I guess :/
