Anyone remind me what number filter a standard Mann on a type 4 is? @77 Westy ? Forgotten what I ordered a while ago. Ta.
W920/17 is the direct equivalent, W920/14 has the same dimensions but includes an anti-drain back valve. W719/30 also has an anti-drain back valve but is 28mm longer. I use W920/14.
@snotty those filters^ don’t have a pressure relief valve (on the Type 4 it’s integral with the filter adaptor bolted on the crankcase), if you don’t have a relief valve in the filter head then the filter itself should have it so that Mann number I quoted earlier might not be correct for your Type 1. Let me know if your filter head has a relief valve and if it doesn’t, I’ll try to find the correct filter.

Too late! Just ordered a couple of '17s. They're fine, been using them for a few years now. 'Tis just an oil filter. My filter head doesn't have the bypass valve, but I can live with it.
A supplementary question about the filter set up, mine seems to always leak a little. It seems to be at the rubber seal on the top of the filter rather than the bracket onto the engine. The seal comes fresh with each filter and I tighten by hand as instructed. Are there any other factors to consider (like the ball valve)?
The only seal is on the filter, the ball valve lifts if the DP is too high (so the engine can’t be starved of oil) but it returns the oil without being filtered and can’t leak externally. There’s not much that can go wrong, unless the filter has been cross-threaded, but check the face on the adaptor where the filter fits for damage. And always use a good quality filter.

Over in T1/full flow land I use W719/5 which does have a relief valve. Its a Golf MK2 part. Much cheaper than the FRAM HP1. 3/4 turn by hand after rubber seal hits the sealing plate. The Mann filter even has little dots marked on the outside every 90 degrees.. look for scratched sealing plate on the filter head, my EMPI came pre-scratched and leaked until I gave it the sandpaper on a piece of glass treatment. My new 1641 engine built with good parts didnt need the full flow and cooler as it runs much cooler, but as it was in the bus anyway, I fitted it to the engine for the filter as much as cooling.
Sometimes you have to tweek them up a fraction after a while ...i remember once when i serviced my type 4 when changing the filter i noticed it was quite loose , it wasn't leaking but i was surprised it wasn't .
W719/5 also has an anti-drain valve – good choice if you have an external cooler. And it is longer than a standard type 4 type filter so has more oil capacity which might be useful on a type 1, if there is enough space for it.
