  2. Try and find an Elring one if you can. Some of their gasket sets used to include one. Or if you've got the part number, try ordering one from a VW dealer.

Doesn't matter where, just make sure it's Elring. Just Kampers will get you one for tomorrow if you order it now..

  4. Also...check your endfloat and adjust if necessary before putting the new one in. Worth a quick check!

  6. No, you've got to measure it. The crank has to have some (very small) amount of endfloat (forget what the number is). If you can feel it - with the flywheel on - it's likely too much, and probably the end bearing shell moving in the case.

Need flywheel on and tightened, then a dial gauge clamped to it to measure the amount of movement within the crankcase.

Likely that if you can't feel any, it's ok, but useful to check.

It will also leak if it is not in straight. Also if the old seal wore a groove in the flywheel, push it in a different amount.
The O ring inside the nose of the flywheel is worth cbanging too - a leak there gets in the clutch..

The difference between new seals is relatively little , but its how they age that makes for leaks sooner or later. If it leaks straight off unless it was damaged when it was installed you have another problem than the seal.

An approximation to correct end float is if you tug and push the flywheel in and out when its all bolted up you can hear a clunk but you cant see it actually move. It needs a small space for expansion but not enough to rattle around. Its basically a similar distance to correctly adjusted tappets.
That also assumes the no1 bearing is not rattling around when its locating dowel has worn loose.
I got a cheap secondhand Imperial units dial indicator off eBay to check my old engine which ran 30000 miles with slightly too much end float but it never increased.

Check its not gearbox oil - by smell and stickyness of gearbox oil. The seal on the gearbox input shaft goes hard and leaks too. Which is potentially more damaging as that can wreck the clutch with a lot of oil.
