Main beam

  1. Hi chaps I'm after a bit of advice. My main beam isn't working. It was working with out any problem. It now isn't? When it was working you would pull the indicator stork towards my self to flash or switch high beam on/off. Now when pulling the stork it doesn't click as it did before nor do the lights flash/come on. Im guessing the switch is at fault? What do you think. If it is the switch would it be better to wire in a main beam switch instead of replacing the whole stork? Any advice or help is apprecaiated. Thanks John

  2. I'd check your flasher/headlight relay first: that's the thing that does the business. Pull it out of its socket, give the connectors a clean, stick it back in with a wiggle.

Start by checking all connections are sound. Earths are really important could be the relay is knackered if low beam is on.

  4. The indicators work is it a separate relay for the mainbeam/headlights? Ill check that out just read that on another post you commented on.

  5. Sounds like the relay is different or more likely the wire has come off

  6. Yes different relay

  7. It is a separate relay, under the fusebox. It’s the thing that goes “clack” when you pull the dip/main stalk.

  10. Looks like a case for the RSPCA with all this pulling of storks going on

  11. Or the margarine inspectors.

  12. So I've fitted a new relay and found the high beam fuse blown. Replaced that aswell. Put the high beam nothing but the fuse blown? I guess the relay is fine because its new. Any ideas switch maybe?

  13. Check and clean the earth’s on the light.

  14. Update

Found a fuse was missing where its gone i haven't got a clue but i now have main beam. How ever when i put the side lights on the fuse is blowing. Dip beam working and main beam now working. Rear lights all working. So i popped another fuse in to check side lights on and it pops as soon is i switch it on. I think it maybe a loose connection in one of the lamps?

  15. If a fuse blows when you turn the (side)lights on, likely that the connections to one of the sidelight bulb holders are the wrong way round - it's a daft design. Work out which side is blowing, then swap over the bulb holder connections. The wrong way round shorts the sidelight supply straight to ground, causing the fuse to blow.

  17. I’ve been following this thread because I recently randomly lost High Beam.
I’ve done some tidying up of the wiring but the fault occurred quite some time afterwards...so I don’t know if there is a connection, or not!
At first High Beam seemed to be permanently ‘on’ but now there is no High Beam at all and the dash light won’t even turn on. The leaver just seems to be able to flap and not stay engaged in the High Beam position - but I’ve rarely used the camper at night so I can’t even remember how it was before.
I have Side Lights and Main Beam, with associated rear lights, but just no High Beam or Flash. Which is why I’m not considering my tidying up to be the cause.

I have, thanks to this thread and others, done/checked the following:
    -New Relay
    -Checked fuses
    -Cleaned up fuse connectors
    -Checked headlight bulbs work
    -Checked dash bulbs work
-Checked headlight & dash bulb wire connections
-Checked earths...but since I have working lights I assume they are ok. I’d moved the RHS one so put it back to where it was and it made no difference. No idea if they are in the right place.

What I haven’t done is go anywhere near the back of the Fuse Box because frankly I am scared! Ha ha It seems every time I ‘fix’ something with electrics something else goes wrong.

Pics are of my switch (which itself is temperamental, as is the Hazard Warning switch - if I wriggle them the lights go off), and earths...

  18. Anyone have any fresh ideas and suggestions with regards to the above?
I’m hoping to get away in the camper over New Years Eve... being able to see where I am going will be useful - suppose I could eat more carrots
I think the headlights are a Hella H4.

  19. I would get rid of those plastic style connectors and solder the wires, the Scothcbodge connectors are also very poor, whats with the tape round the wire on the switch ? Has someone just wrapped some wire round and taped it up ?

i totaly agree with the advice about earth connections. they need to be very clean and to bare metal (no paint)
fixed a few issues on my bus with this simple detail.
