I'm not allowed to give blood in the UK anymore because I've had a blood transfusion at a time when VCJD (human form of mad cows disease) was prominent. Ironically, I was in the bed opposite a lad, Stephen Churchill, who became the first person to die from it - it was truly horrendous to watch... but I do feel quite bad that my bed was covered in "get well soon, Moo" cards and a plethora of cuddly, fluffy, cows that people had sent in.
