I don't know about Assie vans, but pre 76 will be on the LH bulkhead behind the seat. Post 76 on the air pipe under the dash. A piece of paper and a pencil is handy to etch those,

  7. Mine's a 77, so that's probably why I thought that it was there.

  10. Have now put a load of paperwork together and sent to DVLA to show my van was built in April 1975.My V5 shows May 1976 first registered.I printed out the M-plate decoder results, photocopy of the VW transporter and microbus specification guide1967-1979 chapter 3 'cracking the codes' and pictures of the M-plate and chassis plate on my van.I will let you know how I get on when DVLA come back to me.I was thinking ahead in preparation for it being tax free next year and didn't want to wait an extra year!! I would say they were very good and quick when I requested all the previous keepers details at the end of last year.So am hopeful with all the details I have sent them.

@75BAY as far as I'm aware it's not been confirmed it's a rolling tax exemption and even if your van was made in April 75 the cut of date is 31 March isn't it? (before April 1?) you might have another year if it does roll over so to speak.

  12. rickyrooo1 Agree the government have not committed to a rolling 40 year exemption and if I remember correctly they announce each budget the revised date for tax exemption.I have just checked on DVLA website and they currently say 'you don't have to pay vehicle tax on vehicles made before 1 January 1974(known as historic vehicles).'Lets hope they continue to move it forward each year.

  13. The DVLA just registered my USA import Westy as 1st January 1974 AND a historic vehicle despite me proving it was made late 1973 but I'm not going to push it as I have no tax either way!

they did the same sort of thing with me, mine was made 6/3/78 but they put 1/1/78 on the log book, i rang them and they said - t's still an S reg either way we don't care..... hopefully when the the tax free gets to my van i can argue the toss a year earlier.

  15. no doubt when it gets to 78 they will be giving rebates n gifts to all brown 78s :D born before life started :D

  16. I wanted to do something on the van but it's just too cold.
So I managed 5 mins outside to photo the m-plate on my Champagne, and on my project van.
Just done my M plate decoder, very excited, (don't get out much).
Champagne's birthday is the 31/3/78 and the project van is a 1974 7 seater micro bus with sliding sunroof and an
ED engine, it was only a shell when I got it so the engine info is new to me.
Do I get free tax on the micro this year?

  17. The DVLA have come back to me today and declined my request to change the manufacture date to bring historic vehicle status one year earlier even with all the details I sent them. However in there defence they do say what I would need to produce to amend the date of manufacture. It is 'An extract from the manufacturer/factory record or confirmation from the manufacturer on headed paper-these documents should provide the chassis number of the vehicle plus the month and year of production'.Further options are mentioned but refer to certain marks ie Jaguar.Maybe of interest to anyone wanting to change the manufacture date of a vehicle so it is correct is that 'General dating evidence from any vehicle enthusiast club or specialist vehicle dating service will not be acceptable in these specific circumstances'. I have now completed and sent an application to the VW museum for a birth certificate as I see this as the only option to progress this. Will update if of interest to anyone on how long the birth certificate takes, saying 8 months at the moment.

  18. Sounds like it all depends on who is processing your application @75BAY as like I said a few posts above they were fine with a copy of m-plate decoded, a pic of the m-plate and a supporting letter from the VW Owners Club only a few weeks ago

  19. I was hoping it would be the same for me and totally agree it's all about the person who is processing the application.

  20. Looks like ours were probably dipped in the same tank

    Just done mine:
    Model/Year 1974
Planned Production Date Friday 09 November 1973
Paint Color L65K Ravenna Green girlfriend thinks it's yellow but I'm with green
Interior Color 49 Camping Red Err it's defo green

So potentially could be historic/tax free!!
