Lower profile tyres on stock rims

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Chipp, Jan 24, 2012.

  1. Has anyone fitted slightly lower profile tyres on their stock 14" wheels ie 75 or 65 depth?

Has it made much difference with regard to gear ratios etc, would a wider tyre, and therefore slightly deeper, improve this on the rear?

I know its silly, but I just want the look of lower profile tyres, I just think it looks better on a (moderatley) lowered van.

  2. my last bay had 185 65 14 tyres when i bought it and my first bay had 185 60 14 tyres (both mainly due to suspension drops) reducing the rolling radius will increase the engine revs at any given speed :'( i wouldnt go any lower than 70 profile myself. the 65's werent to bad with a 2.0litre box but the 60's were nuts with a 1600 box!!!

  3. I have a 2L engine and gear box with uprated camshaft so things shouldnt be too bad.

Looks like i will be goin for 70s then see how that looks.

Are stock wheels 80 or 85 depth by the way?

  5. thanks for all the info

  6. My tyres are 165x65x14 They are nice and low but look lost in the wheel arch and I would get better mpg out of bigger tyres and will fit bigger ones when these wear out. I don't have a rev counter but go pretty slow anyway
