Need some advice, I've got an annoying leak coming from where you fill the oil up. Why would the oil be getting up here? Engine runs ok no issues as far as I know.

  2. any pics, type 1 or 4 ?

Type 1 engine seems to be where the filler neck meets the canister at the top. I've changed the metal seals too. Still leaking!

    Breather tube blocked with gack?

  5. Could be breather blocked up, causing crankcase pressure to build up. Or...could be rust pinholes in the base of the pressed filler part, where it meets the stand. Seen several that have quietly rotted. Shine a torch down the filler, see if you can see light from the base of the "canister".

the type 1 motors have a thin steel baffle which sits on the base of the oil filler, top of the engine case. It only fits one way round, if its wrong, oil gets past it and leaks out

  7. Didnt it used to be a cork jobby? Or am I thinking of the wrong bit, needed a silly tool to undo the special nut !

  9. You do need a special tool. Good luck getting the nut undone if it's been on for years...

  10. I had oil leaking onto the cylinder tinware from the oil breather box/filler. It had a small pinhole which I couldn't see until paint removed.
I have a nearly brand new one spare as I fitted a alloy filler if you need one..

  11. I think moisture gets trapped in the base and rots pinholes in them. As above, I've had two that leaked.

This time of year the stock filler/ breather box gets full of acidic emulsion.

But if its leaking from a join, I am sure there is space for a good old paper gasket. Go on eBay or down a good motor factors and buy a set of A4 gasket paper in various thicknesses and cut your own... the number of £15 carburettor base gaskets and float chamber gaskets I have made for £3.99 is impressive..

But at least the tin box uses a proper 20mm diameter breather hose unlike the alloy fillers that have a 5mm hole for the breather.. which means the engine will tend to spit oil sooner as the piston rings wear as Karma for fitting bling.

Thankyou. I've just ordered some gasket material, I'll keep the filler in mind if its still leaks after that.

Breather hose seem fine as you mention mines the 20mm one. Gasket material arriving tue hopefully that will sort it.

  15. It'll be the filler tin that's rotted out with very small pinholes-as mentioned by others...
I made a nut tool from flat bar welded to a bolt coz I couldn't find anyone selling them .
Things have probably changed since then

  16. EMPI do one, but it’s pretty crappy. I ended up cutting them off with a grinder.

The EMPI one which has 2 drive dogs works if no bodger has rounded off the slots in the fixing ring down the hole. Even then you need to press it in quite hard.
Or just push the slotted ring around with a screwdriver and a hammer, ensuring the slots are rounded for next time.

Just an update on this. New gasket has sorted it. No more leaks

  19. This thread has made my day. I’ve changed the gasket twice but still leaking and having gone and had a good look after reading this I’ve found there’s a hole in the oil filler tin just above it!
